Jerry, I agree with you 101%. None of these will trap dirt below the 5 micron size. The fine silt we have out here in AZ is much finer than that. I too had a "guaze type" filter and was tired of cleaning mud out of my throttle body. NOW onto the technical aspect of it.....
By removing the stock airbox and adding a cone filter, you are bringing in more underhood HOT air...So what you say? Well there is a sensor called " intake air charge temp" sensor which tells the computer how dense the air is (in conjunction with other sensors) and alters the Pulse width (theres that word again) of the fuel injector. Summary: Hot air is LESS dense than COLD air. LESS dense (hot) air is less efficiant than cool air (thats why you Jeep runs better in cold, dry air than hot, damp air) Less fuel will be injected into the motor because of the incorrect reading from the IAT sensor....= Less HP.

|1BLKJP||Bingo Jerry. I also noticed the other day that their Dyno results for the cold air intake were at 5000 RPM. Not really in the power band that we use in our jeeps on a regular basis.|

I agree with TDAD. I installed one on my 97 and you can notice the difference in response.
Maybe not the same advantage as the full blown air system, but it does make a difference.
Does anyone have any pictures of a hand made heat shield or details of constructing one. I thought about shaping a piece of aluminum to deflect heat on the side of the filter.

What a waste of friggin money, time, and energy trying to get a K&N to filter air adequately.
The below is my K&N/K&N Outerwears/Unifilter combo that is now finally collecting dust in my junkbox... better than it ever did when it was on my Jeep.

|DoubleUp686||I used to have a cold air intake with a cone filter that I got on ebay for only $60. It definitely gave me more power and sounded cool too, but it was terrible for offroading. If you plan on going offroad, I'd stick with what you have or get an ARB Safari Snorkel. They're expensive but they will protect your engine offroad and increase performance a little bit.|

I'm going to have to disagree with Jerry on this one. I'm running a Rusty's air tube with a K&N filter. This setup is alot less money than the "kits" they sell.
While I agree that the claims of 20 extra HP are probably just marketing BS, the one thing I have noticed is improved throttle response, especially at lower throttle amounts. My Jeep starts out from a stop better, and on the trail it's much easier to feather the throttle in slow situations. With the stock box, it seemed you have to give it gas with no acceleration, and then it would finally go.
