|dmcg||replacing the swaybar and swaybar link bushings will be probably be first on your list. Super easy and around $70 (total) for the poly upgrades. After that I reccommend upper and lower control arm bushings, motor and transmission mounts. The first thing a mechanic friend said to me when I bought my Jeep, "Keep an eye on those bushings." I'd say that's a fair price, assuming that it is in good shape. I'd rather buy a stock Jeep and mod it myself....too many things to mess up when doing mods improperly.

|dmcg||If it's a 98, be prepared to replace all the rubber suspension bushings and be wary of "improvements" made by the previous owner. It seems the buyers of brand new jeeps do a lot of questionable things in relation to mods. Maybe because they have more $$$ than us working guys who buy used Jeeps and we spend our hard earned money on proper repairs and upgrades|

8k for that is way too much if it is mostly stock. The thing I learned about buying a Jeep is that most owners are nutty over what they think the value is vs. what it really is. I paid $5800 three years ago for a 97 with a lift and a number of options in pretty darn good shape. You should offer $6-6500 and see what happens.

|madcap3693||My 6 cyl 98 TJ sport had 111,000 on it. It was stock except for some fog lights. Came with both Hard and soft top. Brand new brakes and plenty of tread left on the tires. $5,000.|

|dan188||A little over a year ago I paid $7,800 for my 1998 TJ, I6 with 5 speed, with 70,000 miles on it. It was in nice condition, but it needed new tires. It also came with the D44 rear and 3.73 gears. The previous owner had a 2" skyjacker BB on it at the time and a set of worn out 31" mud kings, too.... I don't think $8k is too bad, but I'm sure you can talk him down to something like $7,500-7,700. Check things like the exhaust manifold for cracks or leaks, look at the pinion seals on both axles for leaks, look for any mud build up around the transfer case (on top of the skid plate), and if you can, get the guy to jack up the front end and check the u-joints for sloppiness. Also look in the oil fill cap to see if there is any sludge around the valve train, etc. good luck with your possible purchase!|

just as a comment. I paid 8500 for my 2002 tj sport with 70,000 miles. pretty much stock , just 31' tires.

Buying a new 1998 wrangler
I am about to buy a 1998 sahara wrangler with an inline 6 and 5 spd std trany, 103K and a soft top. $8 K is the selling price. It appears to be in pretty good shape but would like to get some input as to what others think on the price?
