scgeek12 ya it will be stainless, and i was also thinking about it lol, im going to go through the fender like a normal snorkel not the hood, dont feel like getting rid of my H2 recovery team decal i have on my hood :P

Kate While I was driving in to town yesterday I was thinking about your project and something popped into my head that I thought I should mention.

Check on that exhaust pipe to be sure if it's stainless or chrome. If it's stainless you have no worries when you bend it. If it's chrome plated, the chrome will crack when bent and eventually flake off.

Kate It will be interesting to see what you come up with.
I hope it all works out the way you want it to

scgeek12 i do get what your saying btw, there are some pretty horrible snorkels out there, but i think this one will look just as good as expensive ones, and its a lot cheaper, and i different then everyone elses which i like

scgeek12 thats exactly why i am going to use exhaust piping, it can be bent and will be all 1 peice not like the pvc ones you listed, i get what your saying now, but i think it will look pretty good, if it looks like complete shit its not to hard to find a black tj hood on craigslist for like $200 which is all that is going to be changed really, and the flare on the stock "snorkel" but dont really care about that if i end up taking it off

ding ding ding! We have a winner!!

My point is, unless you are meticulous in your engineering, execution and materials you're not only going to put something on your Jeep that is going to be the brunt of many jokes, it will be expensive to repair your vehicle to erase the mistake. If your end goal is to be featured on Fail Blog or There or I Fixed It, then just charge right in.

This one was fairly well done but STILL looks like painted black PVC drain pipe.

They all, no matter how well put together, look like something that's been jimmy rigged. If you don't care about that, then that's your prerogative.

But if you care at all about your vehicle's value and appearance then really give it some thought before you start cutting holes in body panels and putting a Home Depot snorkel on it.

The question isn't "CAN it be done?". Of course it can!
The real question is "SHOULD it be done?" - only you have the answer to that one.

scgeek12 you can see the slot in the hood on this one, cant find a pic with a snorkel tho, wont make the hole as big as this
05-02-2011 09:26 AM
scgeek12 i plan on cutting a slot (will prolly use a 3" hole saw) bottom of the hood so it looks like the old m38 jeep snorkel slot, then cutting the flare off the stock airbox "snorkel", getting a rubber connector with 2 hose clamps to connect the pipe to the stock airbox, having the muffler shop bend it to where it is just bove the windshield and runs along the window, then putting a prefilter top on it (like the one on the short snorkel pic you posted) then taking it off, sanding it, rhino lining it,taking a 3" grommet and cutting it to fit on the edge i cut on the hood, then using some weatherstrip adhesive to put it on the cut edge , and getting some military grade velcro and using it to keep it from moving around on the fender, and run it along by the windshield, whats wrong with that?

CMEvans79 no, I never did... I was going to, but this project got lost in the shuffle, I still have the materials, just haven't got around to it.

And even then, your results will vary. A lot of people take chrome to get dipped in acid to full remove it, then you're talking about $$$.

read this over, and then reconsider. Get a PVC snorkel and save yourself some cash.
easy solution to painting chrome , wet sand it with some very rough sand paper, then bed liner it lol, thats what i ended up doing for the lights on my bumper as i hated the chrome on my black on black jeep
05-02-2011 06:35 AM
scgeek12 i know its an old thread but did you ever do this? i was thinking about doing the same thing, with 2.5" pipe, cutting a slot in the hood (like the old M38 ww2 jeeps) and having a muffler shop bend it for me then putting a top pre-filter on it
05-08-2010 07:11 PM
CMEvans79 OH! I found out today that is is 3 inch pipe ... he replaced 3 inch with 5 inch on his semi ...
05-08-2010 12:11 PM
jskinn27 i contemplated making my own snorkel out of pvc, but decided if it looked like crap id regret it. so im just going to save for a nice one...its not like i cross water in NM hah

rketr Can it be done? Sure!

Should it be done? Wellllll...

As long as you can make it air tight so no water can get in it should work fine...
05-08-2010 08:53 AM
soonercamp I would think that PVC would be a better route...? Personally I am saving for the ARB snorkel.
05-08-2010 12:43 AM
CMEvans79 Yeah, I was going to put it up next to the jeep when it gets out of the shop before I do anything ... he also has the heat shields from the exhaust that I was thinking about trying to use for something...
05-08-2010 12:40 AM
jwm1986 I'm pretty sure that is going to look really silly... Can't find any smaller diameter tubing? I wouldn't use anything larger than 3" for something like that...
05-08-2010 12:36 AM
s3nt3nc3d Have fun painting that chrome...

Snorkel out of 5inch exhaust pipe?

Can it be done, should it be done? My dad has a long piece of 5 inch chrome exhaust pipe that he said I could have an maybe make a snorkel out of ... I was thinking it should work, but I would have to buy a pre filter for it and of course... paint it black what do all you experts think?
