StephTech Here's my sun top entry... have to have something here in TX so you don't fry at the stoplights!
I used the 80% sun-blocking, pet resistant screen from Lowe's, sewed the edges, grommets, and adjustable toggle ball straps from WalMart (my favorite).

Jacqui Ah, sweet! Was just wondering if anyone tried using landscaping fabric. Looks good! Does it feel durable? I never even thought to make our own bikini or safari top. What an easy, inexpensive project! I have an antique Singer sewing machine that easily sews through canvas and multiple layers of jeans, so I'm sure it can handle this. Another thing on the to-do list! Will be perfect for winter here in the desert.

GoldenSahara00 I did this but used camo duct tape and just wrapped my jeep in it. pretty cool for making doors and hood scoops too.

But pretty sweet idea something I will have to try when I get time!

towerofpower84 Just finished mine tonight. Used landscaping fabric. (cheap!). Fiberglass carpet tape for the edges. Super sticky and strong (I don't sew lol) Grommets and ball bungees from walmart.

jcf You can sew it actually,I have made lots of stuff out of shade cloth, I have used poly canvas thread to sew it but I had a semi industrial machine at the time. That material is also great for shade houses, pergolas & any summer shade like sails etc. It comes in different colors & Home Depot stocks it or Lowes & is very well wearing. We have it on our veranda, keeps it about 15 deg' cooler

CMEvans79 I have been wanting to make one of these since I saw the Spider place's one.

BlackBox Great idea! I'm definitely making one.

tj04 if you are afraid of th needle use the carpet tape or vinyl caulk....Hot weather here in Va and I have had NO problems!

If you trim out the excess at the corners it's much easier to sew...

It's worth $15 to try, don't you think? I see no reason it wouldn't work... Keep in mind, vinyl is a pain in the rear to sew, it sticks to the plate and presser foot on the machine. But if you compensate for that, it should work fine....

Hawaii 5-0 I know someone who makes boat tarps, and he recommended putting in a cloth strip in the hem to reinforce the stitching. Seems to hold pretty well. bobjenkins Window screen tinting is crap, rips too easily . I tried it with a grommet and about 3 lbs of pulling and it rips even thru 2 layers

Im going to get some pet screen , now my next question , did you use just carpet tape and fold over the edges to make it stronger or glue also? (I dont havea sewing machine nor know how to use one )

Hawaii 5-0 OK, I give up on the whole picture posting. I couldn't get an image shack pic to show up here to save my life. Other websites, no problems at all.

I finished my shade using the pet screen from Lowe's. I had a friend reinforce the edges and sew in a 1" hem. It looks great, but provides very little shade. I will probably look for a material with a tighter weave next summer.

Hawaii 5-0 I looked at the Spider Shade website and saw that they have a full length model that goes over the soundbar. I should have looked there before asking so many questions. Off to Lowe's and Walmart for supplies!

InfernoGirl The ones I used are about 6" long. Canopy Ties from Wally World.... $1.97 for 4......

dwfoulk1s This is a great idea. Something I probably would have never thought of. Now is there some way to make the top of a half door because the one I have is duct taped? It doesn't matter so much now but winter is coming you know.

tj04 If you attach right next to the front's top as close to the horizontal bar there is no problem with flapping...originally my idea was to leave the corners detached and with the two middle attachments I felt it would be fine...I get very little flapping regardless of my multiple set-ups...It seems to get more when I cover the back when the BACK seat is for the window shade fabric, I believe it is the same stuff...What I have is called "sunscreen fabric"....

Hawaii 5-0 Thanks for the info. I'm still not sure what to do about the back. I may try to make a separate back cover and cut it to fit around the edges of the speaker bar pods. I would use the two grommet in the middle method, then put several along the sides. I'm just concerned that it will catch a lot of wind by the speaker pods.

bobjenkins Hey guys good ideas you got here, has anyone tried window shade fabric?

08-08-2010 09:33 PM
tj04 I actually made the hem two different ways...1) I took clear silicon caulk and used it like glue 2) I took carpet seam tape afterwhich I used a roller to get the glue intertwined in the mesh.....I had originally thought of going all the way back but decided instead to use two different tops to do this...I think it adds a little flexibility and when putting behind the front seats it gives you a better mounting method...if you look closely at te last pic the one behind the seat has TWO grommet points as opposed to one on the front top...
08-08-2010 07:26 PM
Hawaii 5-0 Infernogirl, what kind of thread did you use to sew the hem? I looked at the pet screen at Home Depot, and it looked like it wouldn't hold stitches from a sewing machine.

Also, has anyone made one long enough to go back, over the soundbar and rear seat? How did that turn out?

tj04 exactly
08-03-2010 06:35 AM
Neil F. Pretty much the same thing as the Spiderweb shade Wrangler Accessories, Jeep Top, Wrangler Top (but cheaper if you can make it yourself)
08-03-2010 06:24 AM
tj04 I will take some pics of the two together...I have used one to go behind the front seats as a wind screen when the top is up, windows out and its kept the mist from coming through to the front so I was happy about that....
