So, I figured I'd throw in my 2c here on this thread.
Obviously, I don't know any details of what happened with other people's experiences with Garys -- But I can tell you mine, and it's COMPLETELY different than what I'm seeing here.
A few years back, the gas prices jumped, and I was caught driving a brandy-new SUV. My commute was, and still is 100 miles a day. I opted to buy older cars that got better gas mileage and park my SUV. After a couple of months, I started to think, you know -- I should dump that SUV and buy something for the snow, like an old Wrangler. Something with far less electronics to sit in the yard.
After looking around quite a bit on craigslist, ebay and autotrader, a guy pointed me to Gary's Jeeps. This was the first time I'd seen a Jeep for sale, in the condition I was after. Yes, his price was higher than what I was looking to spend, and yes, I could have probably bought one somewhere else for 1/2 the money -- but it would NOT have been from a dealer, and it would NOT be in the same shape.
I'm a car guy. I know what people would do with cars with bondo. I know what a new england rusty frame is, I know one that's obviously in the top 10% when I see it. (or more to the point, banging on it with a screw driver!)
I agree with the other folks here -- Gary isn't a guy who haggles -- His prices are set and knows he'll get it, eventually. I enjoy the art of haggling myself, but whatever, it does make things more simple.
After I bought the jeep, I had full intention to bring it in the woods. After a few weeks, I did. And guess what. I sunk it. I sunk it good. With the 3 speed 32RH, it has a breather just behind the torque converter. It sucked in water, and sent me down the rabbit hole.
I called Gary. I know, this isn't a warranty option, but my hopes is he may have had a used one, or something. He offered me a new reman transmission, at his cost as far as I could tell, and a labor rate to swap it for 1/2 of what I'd have expected. I had'em do it and it was back on the road within a week.
A few months later, I sunk it again. The water was very short distance, so how deep could it be? Turns out, it was a vertical ocean in that spot. I powered through it and got out..... but no matter, I had done it again. Water, in the transmission.
... I sucked it up and called Gary, knowing yep, I'm doing it again. This time, I needed to do the breather mod for the trans before it goes in, so I did it myself. Again, he gave me a smokin' deal on the trans, same as the first.
I sold that jeep to build a different project eventually, and I was googling to see if he was still around and spotted this thread. I figured I'd chime in.
I'm in no way affiliated with Gary. I'm simply a happy customer. This forum acct is new, if for ONLY this thread, it's fine by me. I just wanted to let people know MY experience. You won't find jeeps more looked over than at Gary's. You're not going to find one with a rotted frame, or some horrible damage. Anything can happen with an older truck, and these now, are at least 8yrs old, at most recent. He's not selling an JK's still to this day.
Here's another tidbit which made me buy from him: He's been in that exact location for like 30 years. If he was raping every customer that came through the door, how long do you think he'd be doing business?!
Since I know what you may be thinking -- It's Gary in disguise making this post to cover his ass and make himself look better --
I'll give you some proof. Note the dates!

Anyway. Enough ranting. If you're looking for a Jeep, Gary's is a great place to start. If you're going to go look at one -- hell, I'll go with you. I'll climb under it and look it over as though I was buying it for myself. Just drop me a PM here or JeepForum.

|shipjim||You could always go to the local news tv channel which does exposes'. The will often go out, try to interview the guy and embarrass the sox off him, they often get good results too.|

|Livinstrong||I also have a Jeep whose previous owner had bought it from Gary's Jeeps. When I bought it, I knew it had a cracked head because the owner said it was going through antifreeze and needed to be topped off every month. The fact that the previous owner had been doing so for the year he had owned it not only shows his lack of knowledge on cars, but also how he probably bought it from Gary's Jeeps with the cracked head. Yet another case against Gary's Jeeps.|

Have you started a filing with the BBB? Here's a local link (for you):

You'd be surprised at how fast he starts to listen if you squeeze him a little. If this guy has a history, daylight is the most effective disinfectant.

Gary's Jeeps Chicopee, MA dont go near it
so i bought my jeep from this guy in Massachusetts called Gary's Jeeps. lets say not only is the jeep i bought a month and a half ago without a radiator and transmission right now the guy is a crook. when he sells his stuff he doesn't even bother taking the time to take the rear tires off and check the rear drum brakes. he tells me the rear brakes aren't a safety inspection to look at. but anyway my tranny went the other day because a coolant hose in the radiator went and dumped coolant into the transmission and tore everything apart. so a transmission place is quoting me 2000 for the fix and i still have a warranty under Gary's he doesn't want to hear a thing. so if you ever hear of this guy dont ever go near him because hes a serious crook. all he does it paint the wheel wells and put some nice tires on them but that about all he does. believe me when i tell you that
