|pakrfan19||Thanks Lefty, I get what you're saying. I appreciate your insight into the transmissions. I am not new to off-roading as I own a couple of mid '70's International Scouts. Both are automatics, so I understand the off road capability of an automatic tranny. The more I think of it, the more I am inclined to wait for the Pentastar engine. Everybody has a "sticking point" of something that they must or must not have. Mine "sticking point" is the engine power and torque (I know it's not a race car). Like I said earlier though, if a great deal comes along on a 2011, I will probably jump on it!! I did see a thread here today that they may start 2012 production earlier due to parts issues. I can only hope!!|

My first Jeep was manual. When I fell in love with my current Jeep, I was concerned that it was auto. After having it on trails a few times, it is really not that much of a concern for me. In fact, if you're new to offroad, in some ways it might be easier not dealing with the skinny pedal.
My first Jeep I took anywhere someone said I couldn't go. Had it for almost ten years. I haven't felt like I lost control with auto.
Mine has leather. If you have dogs, go with leather (dog hairs and such), otherwise whatever feels comfortable. Butt warmers (heated seats) are nice, but my heater is pretty kick ass.
I have a 430, but I think maybe the 730 is better.
Bottom line is instead of rejecting a Jeep because of what you think you want, visit a bunch of dealers, find the one that calls out to you, buy it, and have more fun than you thought was legal.
Buying a Jeep is more like finding a soul mate than just buying a car. It's not a car.

You have just as much chance at getting one as anyone else. :-)
I can't speak for all the current owners, but I wouldn't think of upgrading. It would be too much of a hit to trade in my 2010 for 60 hp. If I were in your shoes I would wait.

Thanks again for the info everyone. I am going to have to work through this "dilemma" myself I guess. My heart wants to buy one RIGHT NOW, while my logical side says "wait until the 2012's arrive".
On the Nav front, I bought a lifetime update package from Garmin for my Nuvi for $139 last year. I am glad I did. Of course, it is specific to that unit only, but it reminds you to update periodically. I have "Proclip" mounts in all of my vehicles for it, so it is very handy. When I pull the trigger on a Wrangler, I will probably go with the base media center and do the same thing with a Proclip. Well at least I made that decision!! LOL
Oh, one more thing. A good friend of mine who owns a 2007 Rubi insists that I will probably have to wait at least 6 months to get a 2012 after they start arriving at the dealerships. He says that a lot of current owners will probably want to jump to this new engine. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The 730N does have voice nav, but from what I have heard about that, is it kind of a 'good luck with that feature, you may as well pull over' sort of thing.
As for map updates, I have yet to see any map updates done for free unless you are pirating them (but my handheld Nuvi came with one free update, after that they were $60 each).
I also want to mention that my 2YO handheld Nuvi's maps are far superior to the ones that are in my 2011 Built in Nuvi... JMO. But the 730 uses the Navteq so they could be better I have no idea, but I see a preference to the Nuvi (430) when people have a choice.
I stand by my opinion that you are better off using an aftermarket nav system, because Chrysler is all over the place with their systems, updates and features.

but on to the post, i love my leather and have had the jeep at the beach naked for hours and it was fine when i got in....i lov emy built in nav but as stated above pain in the ass not being able to enter addresses while driving, i also have the automatic being an outside salesmen for work i drive all day long so i didnt want to be bothed shifting especially in NYC, and i love my jeep very very much its a 2011 jku sahar and i will own one forever now

Thanks Dieselbud, those are issues I never thought about!! I think I am going to wait for the 2012 models and the Pentastar engine. I figure dealerships should be able to start ordering 2012's in late August or early September. Thats really only 4 months or so away. I'm not totally out of the market though. If Chrysler does some crazy incentives like employee pricing, 0% financing etc, I will probably move on one. I want one so bad I can taste it!! Yesterday I picked up the pre-approval letter for the financing from my Credit Union. I was planning on buying one today. Thanks to daggo66 for pointing me in the right direction with regard to the new engine!! At least if I buy a 2011, I had all of the facts before I made my purchase. Thanks again everyone!!
P.S. I meant no disrespect to current owners when I commented on how I felt these vehicles are a bit "underpowered". Just my opinion is all!!

The only thing I want to comment on is to not get the built in NAV. Unless you like to pull over and park every time you want to type in or search for a new destination.
You can get the lockpick (another expense...), but it only works with some media systems so be sure and research it before you buy.
I pack my old Nuvi GPS in the console now, so I can find places while my hubby drives... we found it to be really annoying when we were 27 hours from home in a strange country/state on a freeway at 1am and needed to find a Hotel room and were unable to type in the NAV and it was illegal to pull over and there was construction EVERYWHERE (so I loaded up my ipad when we needed help, and ended up with a $290 roaming charge).
I also heard a rumor that the map updates for the NAV will cost us $200, you can pretty much buy a brand new small GPS for that now.
Also, if you like to use bluteooth phone voice command, make sure you phone works with it. A lot of people are having issues and paying a lot of money for nothing.
So be sure and research before you commit...
I will leave all the other stuff for people who know about them... I do love my Jeep though, we all do. Mine is an automatic.

|pakrfan19||Thanks for your responses!! So, let me get this straight, they're putting the Pentastar 3.6 Liter engine in these next year? If that's the case, I will probably wait. I drove a 2009 6 speed (back in 2009) and a 2011 automatic last week. Both were Rubicons. Both felt, to me anyway, a bit underpowered. I'm not as concerned about MPG as I should be. I think a horsepower/torque boost would be in order though.|

I've got a 2011 JKU Rubicon with the 6-spd manual. I learned how to drive on a manual transmission so I'm kind of partial to them. If you know what you're doing, they're just as capable off-road. If you're not used to them, it will be a bit of a challenge at first. Definitely something you can learn to do.
As for the daily driving, the manual is going to perform a lot better on the roads. I test drove the 4-spd auto a couple of times and the power was really lacking in the higher gears. The automatic's overdrive is geared about about 20 percent higher (.84 to .69) in order to keep the MPG rating the same. I wasn't happy with the difference, but definitely give both a test drive before you decide for yourself.
I've not had mine long enough to really comment on the rest of your questions. Although I've heard good things about the Superchips Flashpaq tuner. I ran a similar one in my last vehicle and the performance increase was noticeable. They run about $300 and give you more options than just HP increase. You can also engage the electric locking diffs in 4HI with it, and adjust the spedo for different tires.

4. Yes and no. You can add a hitch and wiring, but not the electronic trailer sway control. If that's not an issue, the hitch and wiring is inexpensive and super easy to add on.
5. Major work for anything other than butt dyno gains. If you can wait the 2012 is getting a new power plant with increased HP and slightly better MPG.

In The Market - Need Info
Hi!! I'm new to the forum and need some advice. I am currently shopping for a 2011 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I will use it as a daily driver (short commute), and of course, some off roading (rural eastern Nevada is made for this). I have a few questions.
1. Which tranny offers the better overall experience (on and off road), M6 or A4?
2. What about leather? Does it hold up well with the roof off (seat covers maybe)?
3. What "media center" do you recommend (I like the idea of built in nav)?
4. Can the trailer tow package be added? (Some of the colors the wife likes don't have it installed).
5. How easy is it to increase the horse power and torque (bolt ons or major work)?
I know that's a lot of info. Any owners, please chime in. Thanks in advance for your help!!
