Just for the record... The 4 cylinder is actually less fuel efficient on the city streets and highways than the 6 cylinder is. Average highway mileage for a perfectly running stock 4 cylinder Jeep fresh off the factory floor was 17mpg. The stock 6 cylinder factory fresh Jeeps got 19mpg.
It's more fuel efficient offroad though. it has PLENTY of torque and just sips the gas on the trails.

|kjballentine||I love my 94 YJ 2.5 4 cyl. My first jeep I ever bought was a 98 cherokee sport with a 4.0, brand new 31" off road tires, paid $400 for it. steal. Anyways, looking back at the 6 and comparing it to my 4 now.... yeah it was nice to have the straight 6 on the highways, but my YJ gets me around just fine. When you decide to buy a wrangler, you're definitely not signing up for a race. I've just grown to love the 4 banger a lot more on the road and at the gas pump. two thumbs up for the 4 banger!!|

I wish I could have the cash ,the tooling and the knowledge to rework the 2.5 into a 200 hp powerhouse .they do it with jap motors .why cant someone do this ?
is it just not possible? seems to be a ton of 2.5s in the world .and I belive if there were a kit to do this with .there would be a lot of beasted up 2.5s
I do love my little motor reminds me of a tractor putting trough the back roads .
it is what it is
mine dose perform well with the snorkel hooked up. pulls 10 times better than without.and getting 19 mi. to the gallon.

|denisbaldwin||I appreciate the fuel economy of my 2.5, especially considering the 33" tires. That said, there's a lot of times where I wish I had just a little more power. Even 20-30 HP would help get over the 50MPH limit that my 4.11 gears and 4 banger keep me at.|

mods on my 2.5 make a 4.0 not pencil out.....unless you tow
a 20 gallon tank makes my 2.5l go pretty dam far. Out there I have learned distance is a better attribute than power.
I have a roof rack and a dirt bike hitch which is all I need. It pushes fully loaded just fine.
But V8/V6 do sound nicer
2.5 > 4.0

I would aggree with running the 2.5 at higher rpm's to get more speed out of it, but I for one still am not what I would call happy with the 2.5 somewhat content would be a better description. Granted I have 33's on it with stock gears but even with 235/75's it was weak.
For those that compare the 2.5 to a 6cyl I will never understand how people think they are even close in power. (I own 3-4.0's now, and have had several in the past)
The gas mileage isn't much better for the lack of power and torque. Mine gets 15-17 with the set-up I have now, and my 88XJ with 275,000k gets the same. My 98 ZJ gets 18-20 with 31's wuth mixed highway driving.
I personally would not feel comfortable pulling any kind of load with it. I have tried and was disappointed.
However.......when the 2.5 is in 4low, it shines for me. That is where it really has impressed me. I almost like it as much as my 4.0's. To me that is the only saving grace because I use it as much off road as on road.

The issue that most people have with the 4cyl is that idiot arrow that tells you to upshift. Put tape over it.
When I got my 94 2.5 it was totaled with 16,000 miles on it. Rebuilt it and people said it was anemic and would hardly pull itself. I told them I wanted a vehicle I could use to tow my hunting trailer to the site and hunt with when I got there, and didn't want to buy a gas station to do it.
When I put the class V hitch on and reinforced it to the frame they laughed.
When I got back from the Jeep Jamborie in Sturgis they didn't laugh any more. 600 miles, 10 hours (including fueling time) pulling a 29' self contained trailer (about 6,000 lb) at 11mpg. Typically running 75-80 on the interstate. (I wasn't passed by a semi the entire trip but I did pass quite a few.)
The key is to drive the engine, not the speedometer. Keep the engine in its power band. It is MUCH better to run that engine continuously at 3500-4000 rpm than to lug it at 2000 rpm. Bearings wear less when spinning under light load than when turning under heavy load. The load is proportioned out over the time period that the crank is under compression/load. Spread the load over twice as many revolutions and you have a LOT less wear. Remember why you bear down on a file, or sandpaper, when you want to cut out more material.
If you want more power on the 2.5, just shift down!

|Yjpower94||I have had both four and six cylinders. I just sold my sprung over yj 4.0 for a stock 2.5 yj. I have seen four bangers go where the sixs and v-8s didn't. This is my forth yj and I will never buy another 4.0 again. 4 cylinder fury haha.|

I'd like to see that, don't suppose you got any pictures of your Jeep doing that? I have a pretty strong 4 cylinder and I don't think I could do that.

|patricks||122,xxx on my 95 and love it. Doesn't move as fast since I put the 33s on it but it isn't a daily driver so its all good. I actually think that the gpm is better in the yj than our v8 hemi xk|

You guys are nuts. Once you hit 88mph in a JEEP, you open up a time travel worm hole and have to enter it, as it is unavoidable. At that point your tires will spin so fast that they light the street on fire and you will suddenly explode into a new alternate time line sometime in the future. That is why nobody goes faster than 80 in a Jeep, cause it's scary.
