Okay, now I really feel stupid

I discovered the problem. The previous owner put 30x9.5 tires on the jeep before he sold it to me. This wider tire is hitting the rubber bumper at the base of the spare. I pulled that off ... end of problem. Duh.

Jp90Talon Are you sure that the hinge isnt just shot? My 01 tailgate started having issues to the point that it wouldnt close unless I pulled up on it when closing it. I had been mounting my 32x11.5x15 spare on the stock carrier and one of the hinges just got tired.

Shelby427 If the hinge bit doesn't correct it, here's how the body shop will.

2x4 or 4x4 block covered with a rag, sitting on a jack. Put jack with block on the liftgate bottom at the latch end. Jack up the jack, slowly/carefully.

Let off pressure and check. Repeat as necessary to realign the gate.

Check latch adjustment, adjust as needed.

That's how it's done.

I've also seen it done with a big long pry bar and block of wood.

And even had one tech, bear of a guy, who would just grab the bottom of gates or doors and pick em up by himself to tweak em back into place.

As weak as the jeeps are you could probably do it that way.

Just be sure the gate is nearly closed when you do it. If you have it open too far all you'll do is buckle the bed at the hinges.

C.L. Try loosening the hinges, closing it, and tightening the hinges? I've got a 35x12.5 spare hanging off my factory tailgate with no sagging.

jefferyfghezzi My 05 is off 1/4". If you put a level on the pumper it is level and you have to raise the level on the tailgate edge 1/4" to level. It is the weight of my 31" spare. A new tire Carrier would probably solve your problem.

Problem with tailgate - UPDATE

Well, it appears that the tailgate on my '04 Wrangler X is crooked. The vertical seam on the edge near the hinges is uneven. Also, the striker already has 3 washers on it, so I don't think I can add any more to it. Might have to visit a body shop.
