erickpl I've done the seal around the air intake. I've also done a seal around the motor on the engine side of the heater core.



This stopped a LOT of it.

If you reach up under your dash you'll feel a spongy gasket. if it is wet, that is likely one of your sources. RTV'ing like in the pic above took care of a lot of it.

I have also noticed that with aftermarket door skins (Bestop), I often end up with water between the Bestop upper and factory half door, so I'm sure some water is getting in that way as well. Haven't figured that one out yet...

Shelby, can you get a pic of the foam you're talking about below?

Def. not. As I've said I had mine removed for a very long period of time and can tell you water does not get into the fresh air intake without it.

Shelby427 On our 97 it does serve as a water block. The right side vent, above the air intake is a solid piece, the rest are screened(?) to allow air in.
Without it, it's a straight shot from the cowl to the intake to the floor.

The only job of that plastic piece is to keep large object like leaves from getting sucked in. On our older style cowl it doesn't play a role in keeping water out. I went 7 months without the plastic piece while I was painting my jeep. Never had any leaks. Also put it back on with some pieces of double sided trim tape, its not fully sealed around the edges, still no leaks and it has been raining a lot.

Plus it came from the factory with double sided tape, nothing special.

Shelby427 Something else, it the above fails. Little easier then pulling the HVAC case out.

Pull the blower motor out. You may be able to look in the case then and see what's up.

From memory, pull the battery out. You may/may not have to remove the PCM too.
But then you'll have access to the motor. Unplug it, some bolts and out it will come.

If you can't see in well, use a mirror/flashlight to see what up.

Shelby427 Give it one more shot. Take the shop vac, and jamb the nozzle onto the drain tube.
It might just yank out what's blocking the system.

BMF machine Ok, I'm a big dummy! Still leaking, I guess I'll have to start disassembling the dash, in the morning...

BMF machine Ok, looking good....doesn't seam to be leaking into my floor board anymore!!!!yay! I got a good deal on this little jeep, the guy hemhawed around about how nice the carpet was, he said he never had the carpet in it. The floor board has been sprayed flat black recently to cover the surface rust. The big dummy, I wonder if he sold it cause he couldn't fix the leak? After I put some miles on it, I'll let ya know how it turned out. I had taken the cowl off at first(like a big dummy.) it was my first time at doing that and it was a pain, but fun......and I even found a use for the expired coat hanger.....lol I ROCK!

BMF machine Ok, seams weird? There was plenty of water draining onto my floor, it just seamed to take a while before it was coming out of the case onto my floor. I was able to poke a coat hanger in there with out too much trouble? Not sure how clogged it was....hopefully the water will stop coming out on my floor now? I'll keep ya posted....

Shelby427 And yeah a blocked a/c drain will allow condensation/water to build up in the evaporator case, until it overflows into the blower housing, and leaks onto the floor.

And your a/c is working if you are using the defroster also, not just when you have the a/c turned on.

Shelby427 Umm, the a/c drain is part of the evaporator case. It has a tube that pokes out through the firewall, to allow condensation drain out. Look down below the battery, for a black tube about 3/4" in diameter sticking straight out of the fire wall.

Take a piece of coat hanger, bend a small hook on the end, CAREFULLY insert into the tube and see if you can catch what's blocking it up. I say careful as the evaporator is right behind that tube so you don't want to willy nilly poke in there or you could get a nasty surprise.

BMF machine Mine seams to be coming from the air conditioner? Any good pointers on how to find and replace the a/c drain?

BMF machine Thanks guys! I have same problem, looked under the hood and can see where the gasket is rotten. Going out to fix it now.

You know what I always thought of? If there is something like this, I have not seen it.
A floor mat with a molded hole that leads through the drain hole on the jeep. If any water accumulates on the mat, it will drain right out. Huh, huh?? Genus right?

Then again, there are times you don't want wet feet.

I just added deep walled floor mats to ours before I fixed the door.
Keeps all the crap and water trapped in them.

kjeeper10 I know you probably don't want to hear this. my jeep leaks all over the place from the day I bought it 11 years ago. I see instances where newer jeeps are having issues also. I just keep the drain plugs out and call it a day

JMc I ended up posting what I did to fix it on a different thread. Here's my response as to what I did to make the fix.

Fnx14 JMc what did it end up being? I am having the same issues and have tried everything you did minus replacing that foam, i figured that foam might be difficult to get ahold of.

JMc Gamgan,

That could make sense. I know there's a foam gasket that surrounds the fresh air deflector door. I could see if that was supposed to seal out the water I could see how that could fail. If you fin the write up I would sure like to read it; I'll look too. Thanks. N advance.

Gamgan Isn't this because if a foam seal that rots away behind the dash around the glove compartment area?? I know I saw a guide on it I'll look it up and post it here

JMc Thanks Vans. It's definately water. When I pour a bottle of water in to the fresh air duct I see it come thru on to the floor.

vans661 Hey Only thing I can think of that would have fluid on your pass floor board is like your heater core... 2 lines going to it, could be your problem.... Also is it actually water? or coolant?

Water on Passenger Floorboard

I know there have been several threads about Jeep's getting water on the passenger floorboards and there has been a lot of good suggestions. However, I've done all of the relevant suggested fixes and still end up with water. This only happens with the Jeep (TJ) in parked, not when it's being driven, so I've eliminated the A/C condensor drain tube as the cause. Here's what I've done thus far.

1.) I removed the cowl cover and cleaned out the cowl drain that's in the middle of the cowl area. Water easily drains thru this now.
2.) I applied RTV around the fresh air intake "scoop" and around the cowl drain.
3.) I sprayed the entire front half of the Jeep while monitoring the leak area. I found it's not coming from the hard top or soft top, it also not coming from the door, windshield or firewall area.
4.) The only way I could get the leak to happen on my own was to pour a bottle of water down the fresh air intake. When I did this the water collected on the floorboard just as it does when it rains.

So, my question is can anyone offer suggestions as to how to prevent this? Is water that gets into the fresh air intake supposed to drain somewhere (other than on to the floor)? If not, what other suggestions do you have to prevent water from getting in to the fresh air intake?
