deathphoenix99 It was a blast. And luckily it wasn't busy at all to me. But then again, my friends and I drove at least 10 miles out on the beach if not farther. But I noticed on our way back in it was pretty busy right by the beach access number 6.

JoniSPI I am glad you enjoy your trips to South Padre Island. I suspect the weekend will be busy although you can always find some quiet spots up north.

If you get a chance atop by and say hello to my husband who I have left taking care of Paragraphs while I am in Denver, finding a Jeep and taking a break from island living.

Have fun!!

deathphoenix99 I never drive on the dunes, for one, it's too soft of sand and I don't want to get stuck, and also i don't want to destroy it, it's beautiful down there. I've been there 3 times soo far, I just like to drive in the semi-soft sand below the dunes and see if I can pull anyone out. I expect it to be busy this weekend, unlike last few times I go in the beginning of April and it's completely empty, which isn't a bad thing either though.

JoniSPI I live on South Padre Island although I am in Denver right now. I just bought a great 2005 Jeep Wrangler with 19,000 miles. I have wanted one for ages so I could navigate the beach all the way to the jetty at Port Mansfield.

That being said, I hope you enjoy your time on the beach but please do not go 4 wheeling in the dunes. SPI is a barrier island with a fragile eco-system. The dunes need to be protected from excessive disturbance to develop vegetation, discourage erosion and ultimately provide protection to the mainland from a catastrophic storm surge.

We are very lucky to have the ability to drive on our beaches and you can find some unbelievably solitary areas on the "north beach" from which to enjoy the sun, gulf, hunt shells or sea beans, surf fish, and generally have a great beach experience.

Come to the island, take your jeep north, only please respect the dunes. I love going on trails in the mountains and will try any back road -- but the dunes on SPI are really too vulnerable to be used for off-road adventures.

Have a great Memorial Day on SPI!!

South Padre Memorial Weekend

So, who's all going to South Padre Island for Memorial Weekend?

I've been planning to go down there with my g/f for a few months now. Plan to go out as far as we can, usually past the special sign so we can relax.

Also, where are some fun places down there to wheel in the sand? I've driven the whole beach part down to the rock fishing point. But that was pretty simple to do and no challenge.
