There was a recall on the 05/06 wranglers just for this problem.
The cup that holds the shaft in place was improperly installed, and could/would prevent the vehicle from locking into park. Might want to give Jeep a call tomorrow.
A free fix is better then a big bucks one if yours falls in the recall.

|rubicon05||Yup, sounds like the parking paw is broken. Yes the trans has to be removed and disasembled to replace the paw.|

|bob turnbow||It does it every time now. Has never been put in park while moving since i've had it. I've been using parking brake but want it fixed. Is pulling the tranny the only way?|

I know ours at times will roll an easy foot or so when put into park. Scared the bajeezus out of me the first couple of times.
If yours rolled multiple feet, only think I can think of is that the park pawl didn't drop down and lock. Might of hung up momentarily.
You'd be amazed at how tiny that little piece of metal is that holds the jeep from moving. I've seen them bent/broken on occasion, usually from someone slamming the vehicle into park while said vehicle is still moving.
If it starts doing it, two choices. Start using the parking brake, or yank the tranny.

Pulled up in the driveway and put my 05 auto 4.0 in park and it would roll just like it was out of gear . Tried it several times, once it went in park but tried it again and it won't now. No noise shifts good never done this before. Anyone have any ideals?
