ok, i bled the clutch today (gravity). first time was not a success. i drove it out of my neighborhood and lost pressure 5 or six times within a mile. i guess maybe i let some air in. re did the whole process (this time on perfectly level ground and in nuetral) not sure if these factor in but it worked. i did have an issue with the bleed valve to keep a steady drip. seemed to keep slowing and stopping and i would just loosen a little more. but in the end it seems to be working fine now. i drove for a good 30 mins without losing pressure once. knock on wood. i hope it stays this way. thanks for the help...

|harleyman33||not to be highjackin your thread...but i slammed a gear the other day and now i have a catch in my clutch..i release the clutch and it takes a second or two for it to come off the floor....acts like somethin is bent...dont seem to be losin any fluid....any ideas|

|edk78||didn't get a chance to bleed it today but took a closer look. the bottom of the trans case has a drop on it. no sign of anything dropping onto the ground just a drip sitting there. could just be a running down from up in the engine, not sure. i did drive around the neighborhood a bunch and pushed the clutch in a good 100-200 times shifting or just pushing it down and coasting some. only lost pressure once and it took a pump in and a half to get pressure back. i'm guessing this gives nothing away as if it's air in the line or a leak. level of fluid in resvoir is staying the same. i hate to be anxios to take it on this 2 hr trip camping but it is tempting. any thoughts. do they usually go out gradually or is there a good chance... boom i loose clutch pressure for good???|

|MasterMind||Hmm..I haven't heard of that before but when you bleed a clutch you have a buddy pump the pedal and have him hold it to the floor. Then you open the bleed valve and let the fluid stream out and close the valve. (make sure your buddy doesn't let off the pedal until you've closed the valve. Do this 3-4 times and you will should be done. Make sure the resiviour stays full. If it falls to low you will have to start over.|

i just read on another thread where someone suggested to have someone remove the resevoir cap and watch the fluid as the clutch gets pumped for air bubbles. it said to pump the clutch until bubbles stop and that gets the air out? is that accurate?

I wouldnt take the chance until it's fixed. I would make figuring this out priority 1 if you want to take it out this weekend.
I would start by bleedin the clutch and going from there.
It sounds like there is air in the lines. When you pump the pedal a few times the air compresses and it is a tiny pocket of air. But when it sits the air expands and makes a bigger pocket of air and you have no/less clutch movement. It could also be the master cylinder. I would start with those 2 since they are the easiest and cheapest fixes

i have a camping trip i want to take the jeep to this weekend. is this an issue where it might lose pressure completly and i'll be stuck? it's about a 2.5 hr drive. in the past week it's happened about 5 or 6 times with it taking 1-4 pumps to get the pressure back.

|MasterMind||Sounds like there might be air in the lines. You should try bleeding the clutch first and go from there. Or possibly the master cylinder is wearing out..good luck and keep us updated|

YJ Clutch loses pressure from time to time
I have an 88 yj. i just had 6 inches of lift put on it and 36x13.50's. i think it might just be a coincidence but i've started to lose clutch pressure periodically. it won't lose it for a couple of days, then it will do it a couple of times in one trip out. i can pump it a couple of times and it comes right back. when it goes out it drops all the way to the floor. when it comes back i have full pressure again. don't see any leaks and the fluid is staying full. i read one thread that talked about the slave, master cyl, and clutch. anyone have this same issue. it doesn't seem to happen at any specific time. just random?
