crafty YJ did not have that part The poster of the question has a YJ and I have never seen those TJ surrounds modified to work on a YJ.

benjamin24 if you go to the "pics of our stable" thread, you'll see a white tj with the doors off and you get a good pic of the door surrounds. Hard plastic pieces that encase the upper half of the full doors.

Walkeraviator The door surronds are on the TJs. Here is a not very good look. It is that plastic piece that you can only see a small part of on the left side of the picture.

crafty Not sure what some of them are talking about. My 92 and 93 YJ had nothing like that. That piece folded down with my soft top hardware. Not a SEPARATE part on a YJ

92jeepster48195 I don't have any black plastic trim that my uppers close against, can I buy them? Do they help keep the rain out?

Thanks!

in your shoes

hi, I'm sort of in your shoes. I have an unwanted hard top that I had a friend help remove. I have full steel doors that I also hate. Anyway, I ordered the wind shield channel and strapless bikini top so I could could get away with no hardtop. For the most part I stayed quite dry, and there was a couple times I drove in absolute down pours. There is a slight gap between the door and roll bar, this did allow a little water in but not much. This winter I will put my hardtop back on, and then in the spring I will order a new soft top.

crafty If you have a windjammer it helps alot with the blowing water from behind.

the YJ from the factory came with hard plastic door surrounds... different but similar to what the TJ has except on the YJ its built into the softtop instead of being seperate components. But with aftermarket softtops like the Bestop Supertop, the hardware does away with those surrounds... instead, the fabric of the new top comes down further and it becomes the "door surround".

but even if you had hard plastic door surrounds like on a tj, with a bikini top it wouldn't do any good cause your basically gauranteeing at least a 1" gap between the upper part of the door and the bikini top &sport bar. Thats why I like soft doors without a surround... it allows you to adjust the upper door frame to bend inward and snug up against the sport bar and bikini top keeping out more of the water.

but still, either way... your going to get wet Its a jeep thing

Levinoss I dont know about YJ's but on the TJ's the half doors dont tend to seal as well as the full doors.

ygohome WHen I had my 89 YJ I upgraded from the factory grey softtop to the black denim Bestop Supertop. after installing it, it was almost like having a totally new jeep

getting rid of the snaps was great too. That was the part that would tear and wear on the old factory top.

I never had full harddoors on my YJ though so I can't really answer your other question... but on my TJ I have both full hard doors and two piece soft doors. the frame area of both the soft and hard doors cover basically the same area and regardless which ones I had on with a bikini top on the jeep in the rain youd still get wet. But with the soft uppers you can at least bend the frame in a little to hug the side rollbars above the door closer to keep more of the rain out.

If your looking for a new softtop you may want to look at the sunrider top from Bestop where the front part fold back... youd get sun when you want it and close it up quick for the rain... not sure if they make it for the YJ though

Bikini top/rain/full door/new soft top questions!

I just joined this site last nite and posted a question about going from half doors to full doors and now I have another question!! Ok, first off my Jeep is a '92 with the original (snap and belt rail) soft top but I have replaced the skins to tinted which look great! Here in Michigan it's hot, then it rains, then it's dry, then it rains, blah blah blah and I am tired of putting the top up and taking it down. I do have a bikini top and I have left it on during the rain and drove around with my upper sliders on and obviously get wet! Anyway, I would like to purchase a pair of full doors so I am wondering do then help keep the rain out any better if I just have the bikini on or is it the same like when I have my upper sliders on? I am also considering purchasing a new soft top with hardware like the newer jeeps have to eliminate the snaps - are the newer tops easier or quicker to put up? Ideally I would like to leave the bikini top on all the time in the Summer/Fall but I don't want to get completely soaked when it rains! Sorry for the rambling but I'm a newbie to the site and have many questions to ask you veteran Jeepsters!

Thanks a bunch!
