I'd say mostly because it was cold... a soft top isn't usually easy to zip till it's about 80*.

crkid Finally went about taking the hard top off and putting the soft top on today. Hardtop went off fine, no problems. Soft top went on good until we put in the windows, keep in mind the top has been folded up on the back for 13 years, putting in the side windows, after I had got the zipper started and got it tucked in the door surround I went to zip it in and the top back corner was so tight it took me about 5 to ten minutes to get the zipper to zip through that corner, I was constantly stretching it to get the zipper to zip in that corner on both sides. Also It was hard to zip at the bottom corners of the back window. Could this be because the soft top has been folded up so long with a few wrinkles and because it was cold? like 50 *

Dragonii, we have a 74 charger! Love that car. Here are some pictures of my jeep.

Dragonii Congratulations, happy birthday and welcome to the wonderful world of Jeep ownership. Now make sure you get a good job, they are expensive.

lol, seriuosly, welcome. I wish i could have gotten a Jeep for my first vehicle. But my first car was kind of cool... I had a '74 Dodge Charger.
It looked just like this one.

I didn't get my Jeep until a couple of months ago and I'm 37... I've wanted one since I was about 7. lol
But she was worth waiting for.

And it is definitely worth taking the top off.

Even if you "break the seal" a little bit of water won't hurt it. They're not Jaguars, and owning a Jeep with never taking the top off is kind of like owning a grill and never tossing a steak on it. lol

You need to post some pics of this ride man. If she was a one owner and treated that well she must be pretty nice.

Good luck, if you have questions we are all here.

Another Guy In A Jeep Im 16 and I switch the hard top and soft top by myself....well my dad helps me put the hardtop in the garage but other than that its by myself. There aint no problems with the sealing and tell him that its a waste of own a jeep where the interior has never seen the sun

I purchased a soft top back in December that had been stored inside the hard top in the storage boot. The owner had purchased the jeep new with both tops and had decided never to remove the hard top. He took a hacksaw to the soft top hardware and got it out of his jeep without removing his hard top

His rear window and quarter windows were in a box about 10" thick and about 2' x 2' square. The door surrounds were folded and in a box about 8" x 8" square and about 20 - 24" tall. Boxes were all marked with "Chrysler" and other basic description of contents in black lettering. The tailgate bar was wrapped in plain brown paper; no header channel. It's part of the hardware / bows for the top.

crkid and there not there. there were 5 straps that had a metal buckle on one end. and one that had a loop on both sides. what are these for?
06-15-2011 09:54 PM
Jersey Sahara The surrounds and rear bar don't fit with the hard top. If they're anywhere they'll be in the box with the windows
06-15-2011 09:39 PM
crkid well the soft top came with it from the factory, the door surrounds and tail gate bar should be on it? or do they not go on when the hardtop is on?
06-15-2011 09:35 PM
Wrangler06 might be in the box then
06-15-2011 09:33 PM
crkid well, lets get this straight. The hardtop is on and never been taken off. Soft top is rolled up right in front of the tail gate with a cover on it that seems like the same material as the soft top. All the side windows and tailgate window are in boxes never opened. all tho i have slid the box open to look. they look perfect!

Should the soft top be ok?

where would the door surrounds and tail gate bar be?
06-15-2011 09:22 PM
Jersey Sahara They seal the soft top for no leaking
06-15-2011 09:19 PM
crkid what are door surrounds and tail gate bar?
06-15-2011 09:07 PM
Wrangler06 before you can use the soft top i meant lol oops
06-15-2011 09:07 PM
Wrangler06 But, it's dad's Jeep, and dad's rules. Your job is to adhere to the policies he has set for you. Get your license, get a job, and get your own Jeep and insurance, and you can do what ever you like with it as long as it is within the law.... [/QUOTE]

he said in his post "my jeep" lol but anywho, IG is right, better check the soft top for holes because if it hasnt moved it 12 years its prob shot, pro wont even fit on the jeep, plus if the hard top is on then your going to need door surrounds and a tailgate bar before you can use the hard top

crkid bump
06-15-2011 02:56 PM
crkid yes there is a cover on the soft top which is rolled up on the back right in front of the tail gate.
06-15-2011 02:52 PM
crkid The top is rolled up on the back right in front of the tail gate. it looks as if it has a cover on top of it? i will go look right quick.

Neil F. People remove the hardtops all the time. (It's not really convenient just to remove for the day but some do it) Mine comes off every spring for the softtop.

Expect it not to come right off. The foam is probably stuck to the tub. Push up on the front and if it does not start breaking loose, you may have to work on it with a putty knife and work it between the tub and top. You are going to have to scrape the remnants of the seal off the bottom of the top and the tub rail. You will have to replace it. Do not use foam from the hardware store. It will stick and tear (I know). The Mopar foam kit costs 29.00. What I found works is R/V camper seal. I got it at Autozone. It is thich dense foam with threads woven into the cover. I sticks very well and will not tear.

Forget about that softtop. It's got to be trashed after 12 years. You are supposed to take it out. Also, unless you have them, the windows are not on the top.

Jersey Sahara I got my jeep as my first vehicle last year too my Soft top was stored underneath the hard top from the PO and when I took it off the soft top had no holes and I have a 98. I also did have my jeep flood once in the first month but that was only because my dad and I didn't put the hard top on right. So just make sure after you take it off that it is on exactly right. And most of all have fun with your jeep!!
