Undead-89 Glad it worked out for you. We would hate for you to be grounded from your Jeep because of someone else's ignorance.

Even if you did call it a car...

The Brake switch should only come on if the brake is set.
The 4wd indicator will only come on if the 4wd is engaged.
You don't have a check engine light.
I think the upshift switch is only used in 2.5's because mine was never wired up from the factory.

Whoever is doing your emissions check must not be as old as your Jeep because your Jeep would have to have more computer controls for that stuff to happen.
one thousand thank-yous. it turns out that it's OBD exempt, i confirmed at the dealer ship than took it back and the guy apoplogized, gave me my money back and smogged it. you saved me endless headaches, thanks for everyones contributions.

Undead-89 On my 89 Jeep the only light that turns on when I start it is the seat belt light and the parking brake if it is set.

It is possible these were never meant to all turn on when you start it and it might be a later model thing and the emissions guy is confused.

not sure where u are located but every state has different emissions laws and regulations..including interior lights working for this.

Tony 76 No what I meant was if the wires are long enough. You said your 4x4 light comes on and off when You start the jeep right. Take that socket with the wires still hooked up from the 4x4 and put it in the spot you need to light up so when you turn vehicle on it will look like the engine lite comes on and off even though it's really the 4x4 light. Hope you understand what I mean.

DangerousJordan its not the socket, i have all working bulbes in there sockets in their correct places and all i get is my seat belt, the shift arrow plain doesnt work when i'm driving or when i start or turn to on position, along with my emiss control... this is definitely not fun any more. does any one out there love electrical problems and live in the sacramento area?? lolz...

Tony 76 Take your 4 wheel drive socket if it fits in your check engine spot just To pass I think all those sockets are the same it should twist in.

They only check to see if the light comes on when you first start it. Doesn't the dome light flick on when you first turn the ignition? If not, i'm sure something does; tap into that.

DangerousJordan i like that idea, but then it will only come on when the door is open

C.L. Stick a little LED flashlight behind the dash and wire it to the dome light! They'll never know the difference.

DangerousJordan well i pulled the cover off and there were no bulbs where the emiss control (CHECK ENGINE??) or the shift arrow were. i tried puttubg my left blinker bulb in the check engine light and it still wouldnt come on... any thoughts?
06-13-2011 03:51 AM
DangerousJordan i'll be checking bulbs tomorrow, but i'm not even getting the shift arrow right now, any chance these are related?
06-10-2011 02:26 AM
Tyewilly The only lights that should come on with the key are cel, shift arrow, and seat belt. Cel and arrow should light for a couple seconds then go out. Seat belt will last a bit longer and may not light if you just turned the key off. I'd definitely check the bulb and make sure it's not burnt out.

DangerousJordan well the weed thing is kinda grey.. it's still considered a federal offense :S

What lights are supposed to be coming on when i turn my jeep on? all i'm getting is my seatbelt light until i put it on.
06-09-2011 09:49 AM
seelye what a twisted world,,you can smoke weed legally, but if your check engine light "dont" come on,your in trouble...hmmm..

from here on out you'll be a "running man"
06-09-2011 09:29 AM
Glenn91YJ I would pull the cluster and make sure the bulb is there and is good before I'd go crazy. I pulled my shift indicator bulb because I was sick of seeing it. It's easy and quick to check.

Hemi YJ Just move back to America. It's probably a ground or old wire issues. Your just going to have to look...forever. Needle it a hay stack probably.

Check engine light ruining my life

Check engine light is ruining my life in a very unconventional manner... my car just passed emissions but in the state of california the check engine light must be working to pass smog, and mine will not come on. When I turn my car on none of the dash lights come on and go off like they should. the 4wd light, blinkers and seat belt light work regularly. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this or knows what to do. Btw mine's a 1990 4 cyl 5 spd with 98k on the clock.

Thanks guys,

Jordan
