I had this problem too. The Novak shift cable will fix this, a little pricey but well worth it.

Shelby427 Yep, see if the Ford owner will help out with the bill to replace it.

By chance were you in 4WH instead of 4WL? More grunt less clutch abuse if you were using 4WL tugging on it.

Rubicon2 I would venture a guess you're probably right. Sounds like a burnt clutch.

Burnt clutch maybe?

Long story short, Sunday I pulled out a friends F-150. Ever since then my Jeep has been acting funny, and by funny I mean obviously broken... I had to tug the Ford out because my winch wouldn't work... Another problem for another post... Anyway, it took a few tugs but I got him out and was greeted by billows of white smoke and the amazing stench of burnt clutch. After I was unstrapped from the Ford I went to leave the pit, my job was done. I threw my stick into first and when I started moving it felt like I was sitting inside a wet dog that was shaking the water off. I stopped, pulled it out of gear and put it back in just to make sure but it did the same thing again. My Jeep is technically drivable, it moves even when its shaking and only has problems when starting from a dead stop. It does the same thing in reverse but nowhere near as bad and if I get the engine revving at about 2200 rpms before I take off then it isn't as bad. Anybody have any ideas what it could be? My guess is in the title.
