This is a horrible piece of advice if I ever saw one. I've spent many winters in PA where tons of salt are dumped on the road daily. Even a $2 can of spray on undercoat will offer some protection. A trip to the car wash after a heavy snow will also help your frame last longer. Ignoring it or doing nothing will only escalate the problems. Go to your local auto supply shop, they will turn you onto some easy to use products that will help convert the rust. There are literally hundreds of products made for this purpose.

Moalder - I was wondering the same thing...if only someone could mark out a diagram as to where to put and where not to put the rustproofing stuff like this. (I LOVE this diagram...whoever did it should be paid $$$$$

Basecamper - You're right. I totally drive it year round and if only you could see the salt trucks here...there's more salt than snow + ice combined on the roads during the winter time!

Cyl3nc3 My 08 is starting to get a a little orange. I wash the under side of my vehicle often, it helps. I live by the ocean but it rarely snows and I swear there's only 2 trucks in the area and they only use sand. I'm gonna try the rust protector liquid wrench makes now. Vaseline works and is safe but hard to get in a lot of areas. Really those parts aren't worth worrying about, you'll replace the engine before they rust off. All I'd worry about is if I ever have to undo any of the bolts.

Look under any car that is driven year around in a winter state where they salt the roads and you will see the same thing. Now my 2003 Miata that is stored winters still has the original paint on the bottom of course it dosen't see rain very often either

demarpaint I'll be using Fluid Film for rust proofing. I don't want to break any rules and post a link. Google Fluid Film, it is very good at rust proofing, and pretty safe to use.

Is this rust

Be carefull when painting the drive shafts. Any paint runs will set up on the lower part of the shafts. This will unbalance them, showing up at highway speeds. This happened to my 98 Tacoma. I didn't know about this. The dealership mechanic mentioned it to me on the day they took the truck away because of the frame recall. The paint really prolonged the life of the frame. Bought used with some cast parts and frame rust already. I painted everything with some type of gooey metal anti rust paint. It worked. May paint my JK this summer too. Thinking about the fish oil treatment instead if the paint comes off during mudding. Motor oil worked for a couple years on a car, so the fish oil makes sense too. The fish oil would be legal. Other non food oil is illegal to paint in most states because it all eventually drips onto the roads and ends up in the ground or water.

moalder Mine looks just like that! Here's my question: is there anything under there that I shouldn't spray? I don't know much about all the components and I dong want to mess anything up.

Wear gloves and work neatly, because it will stain your skin and no matter what you do it will not come off until your skin wears off. I used it over 20 years ago and it had to be top coated then maybe the formula has changed but it didn't like uv exposure back then.

POR-15 is great stuff. I did the entire under body of my old Mustang and it turned out great and stopped any rust in its tracks.

phottomatt The parts pictured accept the diff cover (and maybe even that) are never under coated like the tub and frame.

Awag The best thing I have found for rust is Hydraulic Fluid, it penatrates into the tightest
crevices where paint and heavier fluids will not go, it also displaces water. Just keep it off any brake parts. It also will not hurt your paint, you can research this on the web.
You will need to aply twice a year for good service.

sevenservices with the exception of the axle pig cover (that needs some paint) the parts that are showing rust are the casted ones. Like cast iron, its hardened steel cast solid. It would probably take a hundred years or more for a casted part to rust away. It does not rust and crumble like rolled sheet steel does (body parts) it just gets a coat of surface rust that is harmless.

Do you have or have you ever used cast iron pans? If the oil wears off them they will start to rust like that. It is important to keep the pans with a little bit of cooking oil on them all the time to prevent that.

But yeah, casted parts are thick as hell, absolutely nothing to worry about. OH, I would drip some oil into the rusty threads of the ball joints or wipe grease on them. That way they do not give grief when they need to be removed and changed further down the road.

Snowbucks Yes. That's the way it starts. I wouldn't worry if you plan on getting rid of it in a few years. However, if you keep it: mine developed into two fist size holes through the body fore & aft the side step, and the tranny skid plate started bending down as it rusted out around the bolts holding it up. I also put in new rear springs...turned to rust in a month...even thought I painted them. Man - could you imagine (even at extra cost) an undercarrige/frame powdercoat at the factory as an option!?!?!?!

jk'n Follow the link to the POR 15 website that wranglerlady gave above. It has some testimony about the converters. Anyway, why treat the rust when you can cover it and make it look like it has armor on it...no more rust.

Rustoleum is definately available - son used it to paint his last bike! Not sure on the reformer but will be looking over the next few days. I believe Mitre 10 are a stockist according to one website I read.

Since mine has always bugged me since I got it delivered (looks exactly the same as wranglerlady's pics) I think I will definately be following up on this!

allseeing I have a 1970 mustang that I sandblasted the floor pans and painted all the undercarriage parts that were black with por15 that has been at least 5 years ago and no flaking or rust coming back yet. Granted the car is not an everyday driver but I swear by the por15. It's been holding the doors together on my 1998 dodge truck for about 6 years I just pull the door panel and pour some in the pinch weld about every 8 months granted that's all the bottom of the doors is made of now but the truck is black so you can't hardly tell how bad a shape the doors are in!!

jk'n Looking at the pictures, to me, it looks like your hard parts are effected. Not the body. I doubt they would waste the undercoating on those parts as they will probably out last the body even with the undercoating on it.

That having been said, I just picked up a quart can of POR 15 satin black undercoating at $45.00 per quart. This stuff, my auto-body guy here at work claims, will stick permanently to even rusted parts. Wire brush it, degrease it (strong detergent spray brush if necessary) hit it with a hose, let it dry and then apply. I'm going to apply it with a brush. The finish is not critical under the jeep. I think the gloss attracts too much attention. It is not something I want to draw attention to, just want it to look neat and cared for.

drivebytruckerz A can of flat black spray paint for $0.98 will take care of that for you. A black under-body will set your wheels/tires off and make your Jeep look much better. Old used car dealer trick.

Sheetsd66 - the rust just looks so lame especially when its cleaned up and shiny AND since I haven't even taken it off-roading yet!

SeaComms - I like your display pic lol...so true!

There HAS to be a way to rustproof it 10000% lol (and no, not by seran wrapping it).

SeaComms The rustoleum reformer would be my choice - and may be shortly as mine looks the same - and I live in sub tropical climates - no sign of salt on the road here! Mind you, it also looked like that the day I got it delivered brand new....
