dale 3 Good that you had it checked out!! Plenty out their keep shopping.

Rubicondon53 Good you walked away,, that many things let go by the previous owner tells me that it was not maintained properly from day 1.. Don't walk away, run!! Oh BTW , the rear main seal leaking has been very common in that motor for a very long time,, you'll be lucky to find one that doesn't leak,, as a lifelong jeep owner, I'll just say it's really nothing to worry about, unless it is really bad, you won't loose all that much oil between changes.. I'm willing to bet that that jeep never once experienced any fluid changes except oil in it's lifetime.. Like I said. RUN !!!

Mikekaz1 Well sorry you couldn't make a deal on it. But I would walk away too. Better luck next time!

Update!!!

So I was finally able to get it to my mechanic and boy I am glad I did! First off the water pump was shot, puddle of water under the jeep when the seller rolled up in it. Belt is cracked, right front caliper needs to be replaced, right front tire has a nail in it, valve cover gasket it leaking possible rear main seal also.

Most of that stuff is normal wear and tear and some just unfortunate. The thing that UN-sold me was the water pump! He drove it from his mechanic where the AC was getting fixed to mine and some how his mechanic missed the giant leak! Or it happened in the 3mile drive from his place to mine. The seller lowered the price to $9,100 but i think the water pump would cost $500 to get fixed at a shop, and then the caliper was the #2 reason I walked away as it is best to replace more than just the small part and that too is pricy.

What do you think, good choice to walk away?

Mikekaz1 I have a 2000 sahara auto with a 6 and 100 on the odo. Was $10,500 when I bought it. But I think it was worth it.

IndyJeepMan Paid 6k for my 2000 TJ with 101k on the odo.

Then again, I have 4 angry squirrels and an auto

The little 4cyl has enough torque to get me around, and I love my auto on the rocks.

Just good luck. Hope no problems arise with it after you buy it. Have fun with it!

Rubicondon53 If my A/C ever takes a total crap, it will be replaced with an on board air compressor.. It's a Jeep thing...

Compressor. Recharge ac plus few small parts. Or new unit plus labor. Could be many things.

SurfKaster So did you buy the jeep?
06-28-2011 12:36 AM
Rubicondon53 All the 4.0s have a reputation for the exhaust manifold developing cracks. If you went with the auto, change the fluid. In fact, change out all your drivetrain fluids, as it has most likely never been done.. Congratulations on your new jeep, and good luck !!

Stoff Does anyone know what sort of things might need replacing soon. I know it will depend on how hard it was driven and a whole bunch of other factors but what are the types of things i start running into around 100,000miles?

Teeze Bought my 2000 Sahara a couple months ago. Paid $11 k which was a little on the high side but it was extremely clean and exactly what I had been looking for. Included hard top and everything works. Main thing that sold me was engine had just been rebuilt by local Jeep dealer and cane with 12 mo. warranty. No regrets, really have enjoyed it this spring. Running with bikini top now. If it's what you're looking for I say go for it.

Stoff Giving this one more bump as the deal my go down tomm! Anymore input is greatly appreciated.

dale 3 Plenty of jeeps out their! That price is ok for a no accident jeep.If you want this one minimum $750 off for the crashes if frame was untouched!! I myself would spend a little more to get the odometer below 60k.ODO IS A HUGE FACTOR on wear and corrosion.Ex specially on the beach! No worry in colorado.Todays ecomony i wouldn't pay much more than trade in value.

If one doesn't know how to use a manual properly, then fine, stick with your auto, but once one learns to operate a stick properly, they'll never look back on the auto with any fondness. Of course though, if you are running a mall jeep, it is an entirely different story. I'm thinking from the point of view that a trail rig would have. No wait!! you mean there are jeeps out there that never see the trail? OOOOOHHHHH the PAIN !!

Let's face it. A Jeep is a glorified tractor, not a sports car. When I have my sandy left food hanging out the side from a day at the beach the last thing I want to do is pull it in to shift through the next 5 gears at every red light. Not to mention riding the clutch in hilly terrain, or backing in the driveway. However, that's just me

SurfKaster Because I'm cheap when buying used cars I'd personally use the carfax report to knock him down a bit more. Also, have your mech check around the rear main seal as they're notorious for leaking.
06-23-2011 09:09 PM
Stoff Taking it to the mechanic tomm, and for a final test drive if it checks out I will just go ahead and buy it.

Mortalis5509 What did the mech say?
06-23-2011 06:07 PM
Stoff Anyone else have an opinion as tomm will be D-Day! Will either own my first Jeep or walk away from the deal at the last minute...
06-23-2011 11:40 AM
Stoff Yeah I could go either way with the transmission. Manual is fun, and allows for more control in general. Auto is good too for some steep spots and for convenience.
