huntertim214 just grab a GPS, head out to the dirt roads, and find some two tracks. there are a lot of fun two tracks, trails and logging roads all around that area. Between Harrison and Houghton lake there are lots, along the Muskegon river especially. i was just up there a few weeks ago with the jeep. Also, there is Rocks and Valleys Offroad Park in Harrison, only open on weekends. You can have fun there all day in a stock jeep...plus it's fun watching all the crazy rigs. As far as dunes... there is of course Silver Lake, over in Mears on Lake Michigan (maybe 2 hours from Houghton Lake tops). This area is very popular here in MI, just check out the MI DNR website or go to www.thinkdunes.com for info. I've been going there for about 30 years (and I'm only 33 years old). It's a great place for cruising the sand. A lot of cruising around, relaxing and watching the high dollar vehicles and crazies. There is also a sand hill called Bull Gap just east of Mio (north of St Helen and Hale) that is open to all vehicles. Honestly...this aint much. I guess it used to be more open... but they've closed most of it off so now so it's just one hill climb. I've been there on my quad, and I can walk right up it, no big deal. Not sure about the jeep. Sorry about the novel here...but lot's of good stuff in Northern Lower MI

Hercujeep Well, the state seems to be cracking down on guys that are out tearing up state land. I'm a lifetime Roscommon co. res. How is your jeep set up(capability)? I see your interested in sand but what other wheelin are ya into?

jmt27 i heard alot of trails are getting closed around here though is that true?

jeli2657 Also when I was last around that area the gas stations had local trail maps that weren't on the dnr website. Check out a bp and ask around in the local hardware stores. There are a lot of local unmarked trails that only the locals know about

rcharlier How far north, upper peninsula or just the northern part of the lower peninsula?

In the northern part of the lower peninsula, there are a lot of state trails around Houghton Lake and Higgins Lake in Roscommon County. You can get trail maps from the state website here: DNR ORV/ATV Redirect
