Driller it's a hercules 3.7 turbodiesel some had ford moniker on them. was in a grumman van 82 model I believe. rough hp output of 108-128hp. has a T-19 transmission and most likely is the series 2 engine. with the van would get 14-17 mpg in town and 17-20 on highway. weighs 125 lbs less than a 4BT don't know about the torque. has been rebuilt from somewhere in augusta georgia southeast remanufacturer not sure who. some say they were good little engines and others say they wouldn't go on a long trip with it. beginning to look like a cummins is going to be a better choice any suggestions guys?..Driller

Driller just got back from checking out the engine. It's a 3.7L that's been remanufactured with .20 on mains and standard on rods. the owner has had it for 4 years and it was a twinkies truck. has a gm alternator and the 4-speed trans mates directly to the engine, no adapter. he says a chevy 350 and turbo 400 will mate to it. don't know about any adapter. I've not seen a detroit like this one before, any ideas guys? ..Driller

Driller owner says a 115 hp variety. haven't seen it yet. will see it tomorrow am around lunchtime. got another salvage yard buddy that has a detroit diesel as well that I haven't looked over yet. It appears to be on a towing vehicle, military type. will check that one out as well. I'll bet these are harder to come across parts for. I asked the owner about weight of the engine he had as to weight of the 4BT and he said it might be 50-70 lbs lighter. Just running my options here. my experience with the cummins and detroit diesel are limited to onan variety generators and the detroit diesel generators as they have a reputation for durability and longevity....Driller

What Detroit disel engine does this guy have for sale? Some models are not worth messing around with because they are just not practical in a Jeep. Most certainly a 4 spd will limit your top end without an overdrive.

Driller just came across a detroit diesel with a 4 speed manual trans out of a bread van. guy says it runs really good and asking 1200 for the set up, hopefully all the mounts wiring and stuff to go with it. what little I know about detroit diesels are they are supposed to be a more industrial rated, i.e. cylinder liners etc. than cummins 3.9 4bt.(kind of prefer the cummins) I sure would like some input from you wiser diesel swap gurus..Driller

They do have diesel jeeps just not here in the U.S.. The biggest problem is emissions. Most other countries have more lack emission standards. My buddy though did just get a diesel jeep Cherokee. The only downside is they made it a 2wd. I believe it has the 3.3, but it drives great. The PO traded him jeep for jeep for it.

I did contact them and asked about putting one in a wrangler anytime in the near future but only got back a response that didn't seem too promising. If they did they'd probably not go bigger than a 3.3L. Read somewhere that in India they are gearing up an automotive version of a 3.3L cummins and that might be lurking in the background. My feelings? why not go with the 3.9L and turbo it tuned up to above 180hp. but I don't have say so here..Driller

Amazing work you've done here! You are obviously a gifted and innovative mechanic/engineer/fabricator......am checking into this myself with the 4bt in a yj, and searching with contacts for the drive train. You did your homework and what you've done looks like it'll last into the next century..Driller

Just to help give u an idea.. I have a 2.5 92 yj with 33 inch tired and a 4 inch lift. I have 4.88 gears from G2. 4.88's with 33's on a 4 banger is supposed to bring u back to stock power with no lift and stock tires. I'm picking my jeep up either tom or weds, (gears were put in) and I'll let u know how it feels.

yjkid95 You can get all the power you loss back sometimes it may be peppier then before. Thats the whole point just give us the engine trans and tires your running just like shnutzy has said.

Ggg I have done this swap, I currently have a Cummins 4bt in my TJ so I am not against it in any way. But your bigger tires stole your power not the lift. You need to re-gear your axles to compensate for the tire size. Even swapping to a diesel will usually require a re-gear to get the engine in its power band for the tire size you have. An axle re-gear will be considerably cheaper than an engine swap.

Driller It definitely can be done. Just saw one done by a guy that works for cummins in rocky mount plant in NC that did a 3.3L swap and its been there for 3 years on the road. The guy is cool and definitely foward visioned. You might be able to look for some articles on the diesel forum, google a guy called TDIWyse that did it with a 3.9L cummins. A long thread but has been done. Also look into 4BTswap.com, not sure if that is correct but close...Driller ps, it ain't cheap

gas to diesel conversion..is it possible???

Im new to modifying my jeep, i added a 4inch lift on my 1994 yj but that sucked all power out of my jeep. I was wondering if it were possible to swap my engine with a diesel engine, if possible what do i need to do in order to get this done or do i have to have professionals get this done
