Demodave Didn't crack the case, and the plugs on the TC did not have magnets, just the Trans had the magnet. Will replace at 1K to see what the results are.

AzTJ But not in the transfer case. It doesn't have a magnetized drain plug.

Triple88a No thats not my plug. Just an image of one. Some are even covered with metal so the magnet it self is the plug.

AzTJ Thats more like a transmission plug.

This is what the NP231 plugs look like, and they don't have magnets in them.

1BLKJP Trip is that the plug that came out of your TCase? Because I gaurantee you mine is not like that.

Book says 30k miles to replace TCase fluid. Mine uses ATF+3. However I change mine way before that because I actually use it pretty hard.

Triple88a so when do you recomend replacing tcase oil and w/ what?

BTW the magnet is on the plug it self.

Ben you'd have to crack it to see the parts I'm talking about, There is a slot that the pump pickup tube sits in. That's where are the junk in the 231 settles to. There's nothing you can see in the case when you take the drain/fill plugs out. I just sold my last case that I had laying around or I'd shoot a couple pics of it.

ygohome I just changed the fluid in my tcase (241) about 3 weeks ago. I don't remember the drain plug in my tcase having a magnet for some strange reason. But It had been about 30k miles since the last time I changed the ATF+4 in the case and it was pretty dark. Kindof like engine oil almost. So your probably okay, but as Jack said, just to be sure, it wouldn't hurt to drain and refill again.

1BLKJP Did they crack the case and check the magnet in there also or the screen on the pump? Personally if it had been that long since it had been change (if ever) be listening for any kind of grinding while you are driving (chain stretching etc....) The 231 is a pretty good little case and can stand some pretty good abuse however.

Might be a good idea to drive it for a couple weeks and then drain and refill again.

Transfer Case Fluid

Question, have a 99 TJ manual trans 4 cy. Bought it used. Had all 4 cases fluid changed, ie Diff's, Trans, and TC. Indy shop said Diff's looked good, had alot of crud on the trans magnetic plug, but the TC fluid was black as spades. What should I keep an eye on, and how soon should I have it serviced again. From the looks of it, it has never been changed. 70K miles on the TJ.
