Volunteer/paid Emt, Firefighter in Girdwood Alaska. About 35 mile south of Anchorage, and a wild land firefighter 2. Been with the dept for going in 3 years now.
My volunteer/paid department is set up so we are paid while on a call or in training. Training is mandatory once a week for 4-5 hours plus shifts. We have 12 hour call shifts that require out of towners to sleep in the station. We are also required to have at least 48 hours in call shifts per month.
If pays for the gas and oil changes.

Don't need it for professional Dept, but every bit helps: prior experience, college degree, ect. I did the college degree route, don't use my degree (arson), but I'm sure it helped me get on, and will help me get promoted.
Can't hurt, and college is a great experience! Do remember, you will be given a polygraph, so don't raise TOO much hell!

21 year Civil Air Patrol member. Somewhere around 40 finds and nearly a dozen SAR qualifications. Pay sucks, but I've had experiences that I wouldn't trade for anything. Probably a few more experiences I would trade for nothing, LOL.
If you are interested in EMS you can get a lot of the training for free, or real close to it through CAP, and have a little more experience to base your decision to make it a career or not on.

|Mike5087||Wow glad I found this thread. Been contemplating cruising back to school for a fire science degree then going to try and get on with a fire department to be a fire fighter. Am i going about this the wrong way? Seems like most people I've spoken with have suggested this route. Any advice from the professionals? ( that would be you ladies and gentleman!)|
