|88Sahara||I second the cat converter. I noticed when mine was plugged, my temp would go up at highway speeds. It topped out about 1500 rpms in high gear and wouldn't go any faster.|

Welcome and congrats! I'm a recent Wrangler owner too so I can relate to the elation/confusion you're feeling.
I'm no grease monkey so the only question I can answer is about the acceleration and yeah, it's not unusual for YJs to be slower than a fat guy's metabolism above 50. My YJ is completely stock with the 2.5L/5-speed and while I can cruise comfortably at 65-70, trying to pass anyone is an unattainable fantasy, and trying to maintain speed on an incline requires a downshift. Your '88 has the 4.2 6 and believe it or not, it has less horsepower than the 4. That it has the 3-speed automatic doesn't help much. Its main attribute is the low-end torque, which makes it feel quick in stop-and-go traffic and helps get your through obstacles when you're crawling over rocks, but it's a turtle on the highway.
Also, when you look at the YJ, with it's blocky, rectilinear profile from any angle, it's the aerodynamic equivalent of a barn door, and it's going to be slower than most cars, regardless of engine, at any speed above 50.
That being said, it'll do most of the things any regular car will do. You just need to plan ahead a little more. And if you're anything like me, you'll learn to enjoy the more relaxed pace.

First things first, do a basic tuneup. That includes doing an oil change, new oil filter, new spark plugs, new plug wires, new distributor, new rotor, new air filter, sea foam in the gas tank,and a new fuel filter.
Do all of that before you try a cat. Those are basic tuneup things that should be done 3-4 times a year, so it definitely won't hurt to do it.

|Harmbl||Sounds like the cat conv. could be bad, I had a Honda and a Chevy that did the same thing. I unhooked the down pipe then drove it around the block and ran fine. So put a new one on .Hope it helps.. Love my YJ but it gives me MTPKTS|

ok after driving my jeep further today, it will is slow at allmost all speed, like i mean suppper slow! it also wont go over 2000 rpm on the highway even when flored.
I also cant seem to get the 4x4 to work right. It feels like its pulling in 4lo but i was on a hill trying to climb it, the back tires were both spinning but neither of the fronts where, is that normal?

Just got my first jeep today! an 88yj now i have some ?s
Hey guys, I am a new member from east tennessee, and got my first jeep today! Its is a 1988 yj with a inline 6 and automatic trans 100000 miles. I have some general ?s as this is my first jeep. And hopfully you guys can help!
1. It is slow as a turtle from 50mp on. Its has to be floored to accelorate or mantain speed up a small grade, like i mean 15% highway grade. I am fine with it, but is this normal? It has stock tires no lift.
2. After i drive it along ways it dosent want to start, almost vapor lock till it sets for a while? Is that nomal?
3. What is the procedure for puting it in 4x4 corectly? jeep in netural then select 4 low ect? then back up in reverse after exiting?
4. I dont have a key to the center console where can i get one?
