I had the same problem with broken bolts (same side) on my TJ. There wasn't any nuts on the underside of my TJ.

It took a lot longer than I expected and resulted in more than a few blunt drill bits but I managed to drill out both of the bolts earlier today. If you do plan to drill them out yourself make sure you use high tensile drill bits (e.g Cobalt) they are a little pricey but you should be able to drill out two perhaps four bolts using the same drill bit.

YHSublime I've just gone through a terrible ordeal with all this, as mine broke off as I was pulling them out. I can see why your PO just left them there if they didn't plan on using the rear seat. I'm getting ready to Upol my tub, and I wanted the rear seat to be an option again, plus I use the brackets for my Instatrunk. First I tried for about an hour to get them out. Then I gave up. What I ended up doing is going to a local gas station shop about 2 and a half months later, and paying somebody else to do it. Ended up taking him an hour for both of the bolts on the right hand side seat bracket, and every second I was there, I was thankful that it wasn't me trying to get them out. Also, ended up having to use the torch to heat them up and get them out. Ruined the paint, but no biggie, it's all getting sanded and covered.

GrassKicker If you do drill through, be careful, on the drivers side the fuel line is close to the bolts you will be drilling. Crawl underneath to get a visual.

98bluetjsport I just went through this same issue, sort of, with my new 98. These nuts are welded to the underside of the tub. I ended up breaking off a screw extractor on one before I eventually drilled it out, cautiously and eventually had to use an impact gun on another which rattled the weld loose and it fell off. Didn; thave to apply heat, but that was my next step.

It's tough to get to some of these from underneath, but you can get to it enough to stick a washer and nut onto a new bolt, just be sure to get the appropriate strength bolts. Grade 8 should due the trick as far as I know.

GrassKicker Mine are welded, I had a bolt break off when I removed the brackets to bedline the tub. I stepdrilled out the center then grabbed the bolt from the bottom with vicegrips and spun them all the way through.

jeepers29 They are either nutserts or welded. Don't know which one but I just put a Bestop trailmax II in my TJ and the nuts stayed in place. Good luck.

mingy They are nutserts, I think. One of mine started turning on me when I tried to remove the bolt to install a toolbox. I had to clamp it with a pair of Vicegrips, then replace that bolt with a smaller stainless steel one with appropriate washers and then torque the hell out of it.

Now as far as what you would have to do, hanging your foot up the bodunkus of the guy who flush-cut the bolts would be a good start.

I don't know. They are nutserts, so perhaps you could spot-weld them from below and twist them out? But it's close quarters, may have to drop the fuel tank to do that.

I say find the buffoon who flush cut them and kick his bodunkus until he igures it out.
