Engine came out of 95 YJ that had about 95K miles on it.
I heard it run before it was pulled and it sounded fine. I traded a 93 YJ I6 & AX15, T/C for the engine and a bunch of other parts (AX5, T/C, etc).

Well... then that really does suck.
Hope you can get your money back on a resale, or find a good deal on another engine.

|manley59||Thanks Matt. Good call. I have used this Mechanic for 10 years but one of his newer guys came up with the diagnosis. Piston sleeves break off and then the piston bangs around beating up the cylinder wall so that even with replacement, the cylinder wall is shot.|

How well do you know this mechanic? How long did he have it before determining it was a bad piston and telling you to replace the engine. How does it run when under power and driving it? Have you checked the compression on your piston chambers?
There are a number of other things that might cause a rattling sound from an engine. While there are honest mechanics, way too many look for a $3000 job when a $100 bill might fix the problem.
At the very minimum - get a second opinion from another mechanic.

|C.L.||Transmission and tfer case input shafts are different between the I4 and I6. It's a major operation to do an engine swap. Most people going through all the hassle end up putting something bigger than the chrysler 4.0, since so much has to be replaced anyway. Best bet is to try to unload it for close to what you paid for it, or replace the piston/sleeve.|

I just bought a used '97 without diagnosing the engine rattle correctly. My mechanic says I have a bad piston and that engine replacement is the only way to go. Any other suggestions? Will an I6 fit instead of putting an I4 back in? Don't really have the coin to replace the engine right now. 5 speed trans. seems good, low 4 doesn't engage, high 4 seems OK.
