|Crow||I'm sure it's mentioned in the other referenced threads, but more than twice I've coasted downhill to start with a dead battery in manual 3rd gear. While way back in there, too. But for wiser non forgetful Klutzes this is not an issue! (Playing radio the issue here, my Shortwave/Ham gear plugged in cigarette lighter, DUH).|

Every car I've owned had been manual. To me it's more fun and you have more control over the gears (except during heavy stop and go traffic...its a PITA). It also gives me an excuse for not answering the cell phone. I also have a Corvette Z06 which has a different clutch and shifter feel (a lot stiffer). Since the Vette doesn't get driven as frequently, I have to adjust between the two when I switch cars...but still prefer the maual.
I probably have to resort to automatics when I get old....but until then.....

I currently have both, although the manual tranny ('85) hasn't run in a couple years. The auto tranny in the '11 is awesome for climbing because of the traction control; mash the peddle down and you'll go right up most hills a manual tranny will go.
I haven't tried it for crawling yet but I imagine it wouldn't be as good as a manual tranny. That little extra control goes a long ways when you're teetering on a rock/log/hummer etc.

Auto's are great for standard travel, I love the auto on the floor. My first was a stick, loved it, but got tired of shifting. Got an auto, loved it, but missed the control over shifting. Got a stick, loved it, but again, there are times when shifting is a pain. got an auto, love it, but still miss that control.
I'll tell you one thing, drinking a "can" is a hell of a lot easier in an auto than a stick!

|xj-boonie||The thing I can't stand in all the autos I've ever driven is the pause between stepping on the gas and anything happening. It's frustrating when trying to make a turn in traffic or when passing. I don't heel/toe or any if that crap in my XJ, but I do like that it goes when I need it to, no wait fir the tranny to catch up to the engine.|

This isn't a supercar; I don't need it to up rev or down rev when shifting up or down in order to get the best lap times at the track. My sportscar does these things. The manumatic does enough for the situations in which I would want to shift the Jeep into a lower gear at slow speeds. The manumatic gives me all the control that I need over the gears. I don't need to drive a Jeep like a racecar in manual (heel to toe shift, ride the clutch, etc.) in any situations in which I would use it. Likewise, I gain a more comfortable drive for myself in 90% of my driving life.

On TJ Forums that I used to visit, this was the 2nd most posted question, behind only "how do I turn off my dome lights when the doors are off?"
FWIW I went from the NV3550 in the TJ Rubi (5spd manual) to the W5A580 (5spd auto) in a 4dr JK Rubi. I'll miss the manual transmission a bit, but the new auto is a smooth and precise enough gear box that I'll cope with it. I wouldn't get the previous 4spd auto in the JK based on reputation.

"After driving a Volkswagen a couple of blocks, shifting becomes automatic".
I've had and have both, they both work, get the one you like best.

don't understand this comment.....even on an antique 08 JK I can choose my gear with the shift stick, or leave it in auto.

|jk'n||Since you already have purchased a standard and you are wondering how long it takes to get used to it, I'll start there. I went from an automatic caravan....cause they didn't have it in standard....that I drove for seven long years back to a standard in my jeep. It took me a year and a half to get totally back into a standard. I shift now like I never went to automatic. I also think it is easier to coordinate the feet on my Rubicon with 4.1 gears than it was on my Sahara with 3.73. I drove the Sahara for 8 months before Chrysler bought it back from me. The extra torque off of the stop makes things a little easier. All in all, I will never go back to an automatic unless something happens to one of my legs. But I don't drive standard for a living so I like driving one to get from point A to point B....especially through the woods!|
