roggow ya my 88 yj fuel guage doesnt work either....full is empty and 3\4 is full! i just fill up after 100 mi...130 and im walkin...got a v8 tho....

Kcbehrens I have an 88 yj. The gauge did not work so I cleaned the contacts on the back of the gauge. It works now and it reads ful when ful and empty when empty, but itnis all over the place in between. Anybody ever have that happen? Could it be a loose wire or ground on the tank?

same for my 93, but just for good measure i fill up every 200 miles or so....just to be in a good habit, if i run out of gas before then, somethings very wrong.

andiesel wow I thought my gas gauge was an anomaly. mine starts out at full, then goes to a 1/2 tank and then goes back to full. I use the trip odometer (with a lift and 33's I never let it get too close to 200mi before filling up).

sounds like this is a pretty common problem. I had a mechanic take a look and he said because it's moving but in the wrong direction, the whole relay/wiring thingy needs to be replaced....

so I use the trip odometer.

raycer lol, ok, so I guess it's not too odd

I'll do the odometer method for now I guess though maybe I'll try cleaning the contacts like eglide mentioned since it's free anyway

eglide The actual gauge in the dash has some issues too. Mine only goes down to 1/2 even when disconnected, and it is part of the 4 gauge cluster. I have heard that cleaning the printed circuit board on back of gauges will help in some cases. I took mine apart to do that and discovered the spring in gauge would only return it to 1/2, and went to the odometer method.

BDK Working gas gauge..... whats that? I am used to mine not working, the gauge on my Scout II never worked so its nothing new!

BRunyon7 Honestly though its beat to have bad guess but not once have i thought about not wanting a jeep for it. Its only a SMALL price to pay for the amount of fun and how close of a community you get i love it.

I get to go fill my truck this afternoon... $4 a gallon and I'm looking at over 25 gallons...

Abomination93 If the odometer works just don't go more than 250mi without filling up. Almost every jeep gas gauge lies. I have 8 gallons left when I hit E. Most of us just live with it and know how far we can drive before filling up.

Fuel Gauge question

My new to me 93 YJ's (4.0, 5Spd), fuel gauge is stuck on full. Now, before I drop the tank and change the sending unit, is there anything simpler I should look at before. Any common area the wires may fray or something?

Thanks
