tobycat1 Went muddin today... If you run 33's a re-gear would be nice. My dad got stuck in the mud, if he had a little more power he could have put it in reverse and got out. He couldn't get the tires to spin.

mrbigjeep unless your running oversize tires, regearing would be a waste IMO...

Tj Bunch Fairweather8588, Start with Jacks Post (1BLKJP) I know there are alot of shops out there but Joe will help you out and Give you some options first then call around, It all depends on what you want to do with your TJ. Mine like to mall crawl and light trails as well as DD so my 4cyl 5spd works great 31x10.50-15 2" BB no problems.

The '99 2.5 manual does have 4.10's. My last ride was a '99.

marc1kim If you're in AZ you might want to look up Stu Olson. He's got just about every mod done to a TJ on his website (and then some). He may be able to help you with information, and hook you up with people that have the know-how of an engine swap. I don't think He's got an entry on his website of an engine swap, so He may be interested in putting yours on there. Good Luck!

tobycat1 Sticks tend to have higher gears than autos.... Could be wrong though. Look at the back of your rear axle and tell us.... I'm curious now.

Tell ya what being as you are here in AZ. Give Joe Daro (Absolute Offroad) a call and just chat with him about your best options. He is a board sponsor here and I gaurantee you that he will not try to sell you on the most expensive option. He will give you the best options for what you are trying to accomplish. Besides he wheels a 4 cyl TJ with silly low gearing in it.

I have the same year and engine, 3.76 or something about that are my stock gears. (3-spd Auto)
1. If you do the re-gear yourself- $300-$500
2. Pay someone to re-gear- $1000 Min
3. Pay someone for engine swap- over $2000 for sure.

with a 4cyl more than likely 4.11's.

If you want recommendations on shops, Absolute Offroad is in PHX and DesertFab is in Apache Junction. I know guys at both and they both do awesome work.

Fairweather8588 Due to my lack of mechanical skills (and both of my mechanic friends have moved to another part of the country) I'd most likely just to someone here in the valley to do the swap. anyone w/ suggestions?

AzTJ It would take quite a bit. You'd need the 4.0/ECU/Wire harness. If you were doing it in your garage, I'd say at least a full week or couple of weekends.

Just wondering...

I've had my '99 for almost a year now and although I'm a huge jeep fan, still don't have a lot of knowledge about them, thus I come to the experts here a WF...

How difficult would it be to swap the 2.5L for the 4.0?
