This is a 6 cyl? correct!
turn the ignition on, off, on, off, and once more on. Do this without starting the engine. Your check engine light will start flashing! YOu better get pencil and paper to right these down. It will be a 2 digit number so watch for a SLIGHT pause in the flashes.
I have a Manuel that gives all the codes. Do this a couple times to make sure you got it correct.
After it has flashed the defective codes! it will end by flashing a code of 55. Five short flashes.....pause....five short flashes.

Before you go chasing ghosts. Have you checked to see if any codes come up? The 88 era uses a computer controled carb. I had a 89 that had similar problems and it turned out to be a "map" sensor.
You can see your code readout by going threw a series of ignition key strokes and counting flashes.
Check this first. It also could be a spark/ ignition problem and the computer is trying to compensate and can't.
Start with the codes! do a complete tuneup including timing. Then start looking for failure!

Help! Fuel Problems.
I bought an 88 Jeep Wrangler about a month ago. When I got it, I noticed that it would die during warm up, in neutral. I would restart and allow it to warm up, then it seemed fine. This past week, the problem has progressed. At start up, the RPM will jump from 0-10 about 2-3 times before it levels out. But after 3 minutes, RPM will drop below 10, vibrate hard and die out (all while in neutral). I would normally restart up to 3 times before it runs normally.
Today, it took 45 mins to warm up and it died out 4 times. Before it dies out, I'd add some gas to maintain the RPM at 10, but it chokes (buggs out like not enough gas is getting to the engine). While driving, I noticed that at every stop (full stop/turn) it would bugg out and vibrate hard until I take off.
It was running fine in the higher gears (3rd-5th), when I turn it off it takes another 45 mins to get the RPM to balance out (same problem). A friend with a Jeep suggested I use "Complete Fuel Cleaner," by pouring it into my gas tank then letting it run.
I followed the instructions as listed, but it took longer this time. Now when I drive it, it back fires and and even in 3rd -5th gear, it buggs out hard. (So much worse!!) I dies out in second gear and even in higher gears (had to push the gas pedal all the way in), it seemed like little to no gas was getting to the engine. The headlights would dim and shows signs of dying out.
I drove it to my fathers, another Jeep owner, he noticed the fuel intake is an original part and suggest I change it. But he's not sure what is causing it to do this.
I love this jeep and money is tight (single mother), so I'm hoping to get some help before I buy parts I dont actually need.
Any help would be great!
