Engineers are weird and often times like to tie something insignificant to something significant.

OMG! YES, that is where the smoke is stored, if you dont put that in, when you short something out there wont be any smoke!

IDSKoT I took that piece out, replaced the fuse, put in the key with the lights on, turned the engine over. Worked fine. Do I really need that piece?

Well, the short didn't happen until I took my column apart up to taking the key out. I tried to tear that out, not realizing the key had to come out first. So I broke it. I didn't do anything else.

mark1305 That is the key warning buzzer switch. Sounds like it may be (but not for sure) part of the problem in that it closes a buzzer circuit when you put the key in. The real problem is most likely as you say a short somewhere else in the wiring. But putting the key in makes that switch close. So the sparks could be coming from the broken switch, but are only the symptom of a dead short elsewhere.

What is this? white connector inside steering column

This white piece inside Mt steering column is busted and I can't figure out what its for. I have a short in my column, and if I replace my fuse for my running lights sparks fly out the ignition when the keys put in. Is it this piece?
