haha....i am slow. you know, i followed your build on Pirate, and even after your comment, i never made the connection.

that jeep is certainly expensive, but i like the overall idea behind it....LOG, high ground clearance. something i would like to model mine after. i will be using a lot of BTF parts and ideas. i like their front no fender solution, the front bumper/hoop, the notched front frame rail to clear the steering under compression, the rear frame kit and mod to fit coilovers, the dash . lots of good ideas there.

erickpl MrC, I really like how you set up your front end on that TJ and you have a LOT of good ideas and implementations in your rig.

TXST8tj yeah, i think so....for a top that was in excellent condition, i think it was a pretty good deal on his part. i thought about asking for more, but i really did't want that thing sitting in the garage forever. the primary reason i sold it was because i really didn't like the "SuperTop" design. one day, i will get another top, but it will be a factory style.

TXST8tj i might pick up a safari top in the future. no rush now though.

i MAY do boatsides. it is something i have been thinking about. we'll just have to see. it will have a flat belly when it's all done though (at least one of us will have a flat belly).

i sold the top for $450 last night. i was going to dump that on a lift and new rims, but i need to go get the 'paperwork' stuff done (sales tax, title transfer, registration, inspection), so i will just get the lift, wheels, and tires over the next couple months.
i don't want to sink a whole lot of money into this stuff since it will not be used in the end, but i have no problem spending a few hundred bucks to get this looking a bit nicer to drive around in.

TXST8tj i had used the Fusion on my previous jeep on the flares and it turned out great. i will be doing the same with this jeep very soon....before it gets and stays too cool.
there really is not much prep when using Fusion. it's more of a just make sure it's clean sort of prep deal.

erickpl Patrick, looking nice. Glad you found a sucke... err buyer for that top.

If you want to run in the cold, go for a cheap bikini top or safari top, then find a windjammer on ebay. I got my jammer/duster setup for 80.00 and it would let you run in the cold a bit easier.

You considered boatsiding it too with a bellyup? Talk about clearance underneath!!!!

My wife encouraged my lift/bigger tires/locker when we went on a run up in Kentucky. We had a hard time dragging the diff and spinning the wheels and said I need more clearance and more power (she didn't see her side wheels spinning). So I told her what I needed, presented 3 options to solve it and we went with the middle range of the 3. I shoulda put a V8 in there for the 'more power' aspect, but that would have meant a transmission/t-case/driveshaft/axle upgrade that would have blown ANY budget we had set.

Even if you go with used stuff, you should be able to sell a lot of this temporary stuff. But temporary in this case could easily be a year or three. Let me know the backspacing on those wheels.

Lev, I painted my flares with the Krylon Fusion and I can tell you that with the proper prep, it'll be everything you want. It really is good quality paint and it's pretty cheap, too.

Let us know how it goes.....

Levinoss Well from what iv read the kyrlon fusion is supposed to be the end all for painting the interior, guess i'll have to do it my self and see how it goes. Think soon I'll do a test on one of my half door panels and see how it goes. See how it does out in the weather and sun.

TXST8tj i just sold my Bestop Super Top.
pending wife approval, i have a line on a cheap lift (she is the one insisting on it anway).
i'll probably pick up some black steelies and then look for some 33s. none of that will be permanent, but for the length of time i will be driving it like that while collecting parts, it will be worth it.

TXST8tj well i think the owner before the guy i bought it from probably used Krylon Fusion. without knowing how he applied it (prep, amount of coats, dry time, etc.) it's hard to say how it really holds up. it pretty much looks like crap in this jeep because so much had chipped off. on the areas where it had not chipped, it actually looked factory. if he did a cleaner application (he didn't tape anything off before painting) and nothing had chipped, i probably would not have known it was painted. the paint stripper i am using works wonders, so if you do mess up or don't like it, it will take off the paint without damaging the factory panel. if you do it, disassemble everything first and paint each part separately to cover all parts of each part. it's a lot of work, but this guy didn't and it shows.

i've seen complete dashes being sold from TJs being parted out for around $300. it's a lot to spend just for a color difference, but it would be factory and would hold up 10x better than paint.

i will not be repainting the interior. i do prefer the black/charcoal interior like i had in my 02, but i would rather the tan than have it spray painted.

Levinoss Looks good, if you want to repaint the interior go with the krylon fusion. I would like to see how it turns out before I do it on my own jeep.

GrnTJ Yea. Im pretty happy with the power my 4.0 puts out. TJ's are light vehicles anyway so that engine has the power to move it along. Granted a V8 of any sort is an obvious upgrade in power but my build is only gonna involve 31's or possibly 32's. So I dont think I need much more power anyway. I actually am going down in tire size too. Id just like to keep a near stock looking vehicle that does great off road so its getting locked front and rear two (also goin with small tires so I can lock the stock axles).

TXST8tj yeah, it's pretty funny that she usually drags her feet about stuff like that, but when she saw this one, the first thing out of her mouth was mention of how small it is and for me to look for a lift and tires ASAP. it will be nice to have it a bit bigger while i am collecting parts for the actual REAL build.
the LS1 will be nice. i have gone over several times about what i want to run and in the end, i always come back to it. with this jeep, i am just going to do all the things that i really want to do. i would rather wait and save up for the things that i really want instead of buying something i don't want just to save a few bucks here and there. like buying a 6cyl and not being happy with its lack of power, and then spend money trying to give it more power, and then end up with a maxed out 6cyl that cost as much as the engine i wanted in the first place that would've started with more power than i have in some souped up 6cyl.....yada yada yada.

GrnTJ Wow, that is gonna be sweet. Ha, gotta love it when the wifey actually ASKS you to lift it! Better take that while you can get it. I bet you can wait for the day you go from that 4 banger to an LS1. Talk about a power upgrade!

Daddy got a new Jeep !!!

well it's been long enough without a jeep. i had sold mine back in April to pay some stuff off quickly before our son was born. ( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...t/P4080003.jpg ) it did what it needed to do so my wife gave me the go-ahead to start looking for a new jeep. i knew what i wanted to do this go round, so i knew exactly what i was looking for with a new jeep. i knew i wanted a TJ and i knew i wanted it to be the cheapest i could find. if it ran, that was a bonus, but non-running would've been more than ok...just because it would drive the price down.
long story short...i found a 1997 SE 4cyl, 5spd, for $4000. it runs great. the guy drove it daily. has 122k miles. 1 year old soft top, brand new cd player and speakers. a few dents up front....grille, hood, and passenger fender. no biggie, just more stuff to drive the price down.
the guy told me there was some sort of oil issue that was not completely sure of what it was and had not fixed it. turns out, it didn't seem anyone changed the oil anytime recently. it looks like they were just adding oil. i changed it today and there was about 7-8 quarts of oil in a 4qt capacity. fixed the problem right away.....how novel, you have to change the oil!
there are plenty of things to do with it to clean it up to drive around, but that will just be until it goes to a crazy build.














the owner before the previous owner painted the dash and doors with spray paint to go from the stock tan, to grey. it looked terrible and was mostly chipping. i took to that this afternoon and started getting a lot of it off. still a bit more to do. i don't like the tan, but it's elevntybillion times better than a crap spray paint job.
i will also paint the flares just to hold me over.







it has crap wheels and worse tires. once again...it just helped drive the price down. the wife was actually kinda sad to see it so little, as she said. eventhough i will be doing a full custom suspension, she wants me to lift it at least a little and get a little bigger tire just so it doesn't look so "embarassing" being so small. who am i to complain. seeing as i don't want to spend a lot on something i am not going to keep, i will be searching craigslist for CHEAP used/take-off kits or whatever, and probably some used black steelies and tires. there are plenty out there.




the basic ultimate plan with this jeep is the "end-all build" for me. it will take a while to complete, but i will wait longer to get exactly what i want.
