Looks like a great build! Just some thought. If you use that front d44 you might want that soa lift so you can run as big a tire as possible.
It looks like a LP d44 front so you'll want the xtra clearence for that diff if you can. It's pinion is only a couple inches lower than the hp diffs but every inch makes a difference.
This is especially if your planning to offroad it a lot. Just some thoughts. Good luck!

I'm disassembling the Jeep right now. My plan is to pull the tub, lay it on its side on some dollies in my garage, and repair the rusted through areas of it. I'm going to strip the frame and send it out to be sandblasted. When it comes back, I'll repair all of the rotted spots with new metal. I'm replacing the 2.5/ 5 speed with a mildly built Dodge 318 and TF727 automatic. Yesterday, I picked up Dana 44 front and rear axles out of a '86 Grand Wagoneer, and a TF727 out of a '85 Dodge Ramcharger.
A previous owner had a shop fo a crappy paint job which is now badly faded and chipping away in spots. It was originally a black Jeep. I'm either going to paint it a bronze metallic, or possibly gun metal grey metallic. It's very early in the project, so that is subject to change.

|jk'n||Nice....I'm looking forward to see your progress. I've never done welding but the thought of doing some body work intrigues me. I was just checking out welders today at Harbor Freight. They had a bunch of different types. I wouldn't know where to begin. But when I retire, I'm looking forward to tinkering with jeeps.|

|raycer||I just recently got a Yj myself; a 93 4.0 5Speed. I love it but it does have a bit of Jeep Rust, though on the tub and thankfully not the frame. Can't wait to see you progress; I like the color.|

|eglide||Go on ebay or amazon and buy the factory shop manuals. There's one for mechanical/body and one for electrical. Should be less than $100 for both. They are well worth it and will save you a lot of time. There is also a company autorust.com that sells weld in frame sections for repair of real bad frame rust issues.|

|RLaFitte||That is a nice-looking YJ and I would be absolutely thrilled to own it, as is. The 2.5 engine has plenty power for it. All I could see is the need for a 2.5 inch lift and new tires. But if you love mods, then you are in the right neighborhood for ideas. Welcome aboard!|

New guy with his first Jeep
Hey guys, I'm Dave, and I just joined the Jeep brotherhood. I just bought a 1989 YJ. She's tired and beat, but she's all mine! It has the 2.5L and 5 speed. I'm totally new to off-roading in general, and new to Jeeps in particular, so let the learning begin! This will be a dual purpose vehicle, but, first things first. I've backed it into my garage, in preparation for a tub-off restoration. It needs it. It has introduced me to Jeep rust, and being a Long island Jeep most of its life, it has the usual Jeep rust issues, with a couple holes thrown in. Rust not only gnaws at steel, but it gnaws at my psyche. But, its nothing that a plasma cutter, a mig welder and a sheet of 1/8" steel can't fix, so I'm game!
My plans, although sketchy and subject to change at this point, include upgrading the axles. I'm thinking Dana 44 front and 8.8 rear. The 2.5L and 5 speed will be replaced by a mildly built 318 and automatic (904 or 999?). The 318 was given to me for free, and it has only 53k miles on it, so that's one thing I'm definitely incorporating into the build. Also want to give the Jeep a 5 or 6" lift, although not sure at this point if I should go SOA or use one of the kits that use high arch leaf springs, like what BDS makes. 35" tires are in the plans, as well as a more substantial rollcage than the current sport rollbar. Again, this is just a thumbnail outline, and subject to many changes along the way.
