Please read your owner's manual for the proper procedure to get into 4L. It should not be difficult at all. You should be rolling at 3 to 4 mph. If you are using "some force" you are risking damage.

Zip Im brand new to Jeep and 4x4. i wish I understood what you guys were talking about. When I tried to put my Sport in 4h and 4l, i found it to be a little difficult getting it into both. Is this normal for the wrangler? Also, I did have to use some force to get it into 4l. I was at a stop when I did this. How can I tell if any of the above mentioned (not good) things happened to my Sport??? Also, Any info for future reference would be great.....Thanks

rics1997 While getting an oil change yesterday, I decided to pick up a few of these. Got 4, figured if I am on the trail with other JK's and they have an issue, i can help them out too.

Saying that, the part number changed by one letter to Part# 1-68064273AB

Not that he had any trouble finding it under the old part number. It was pretty costly though. 30 cents each, so 4 of them cost me $1.32 with tax.

HAHA, too bad she's not blind and can see the fuel gauge. So when i got home yesterday, i checked the bottom of the transfer case where that clip is. Everything is still in and together, but i shifted into 4x4 low and it happened again. So it isn't on the bottom end, so common sense told me it was at the top where the shifter is. So i took out the four bolts on the center console. I found the problem!!!!! Right where the shifter connected to the cable, their is a bushing that was inside the piece that connected to the cable. That bushing wore out and broke the clip on the top end. I was looking for diagrams of the JK model transfer case, but i couldn't find one to find out the name of that part, anyone have any idea? Because the top end looks different than the bottom end of the transfer case. Pretty sure the clip is the same, but the bushing isn't. I know their is enough information on the internet for me to find this, but i rather ask ALL of you lovely people who love to help!

Nadurra When you shifted where you moving? I've had a few vehicles where shifting into 4L would get touchy.

It felt like the linkage had broken, it was moving back and forth freely. When i got i lit it up with two flashlights, i saw that the cable from the t-case to the shifter was still connected. So i had to move it back into 2wd with my hand, but now that i know about this bushing clip, im going to have a look at it when i get home. If that is the case, i already called the dealer with the part number and they have twelve in stock. Might have to take all of them! haha

ESP I often wonder about this. I know the part is "designed" to break if there is too much force or it is binding but I hear about this happening to those when they are shifting correctly and applying only the needed amount of pressure. I guess this falls under poor design. I've not had an issue with mine and I've shifted into both many times but it worries me because I don't know if I'd know what to do and where to look to fix the plastic clip if it breaks? The OP said that his didn't even break and his t-case linkage was doing the same thing as someones who did by remaining in neutral and almost stranding him.

JIMBOX If it moves "Freely" the bushing is "Kapoot", if it won't move-

99% of the time you have to lightly coast in "N" untill the gears line up, then the shift lever will move back easy--NEVER TRY FORCE !!

Sometimes with an auto, you can just rock from "D" to "R" and that'll lineup the gears-

Thats the same movement for keeping the jeep from getting stuck in sand/snow !!

Do you mean the shifter knob would not move, or that when you moved the shifter the Jeep wouldn't actually engage the transfer case?

rics1997 It happens to many. The Transfer Case has a protection to keep people from forcing it into gear when it is in a bind. (that's supposed to be the reason for it but to most it is a poor design.) There are two plastic clips on the cable ends from the shifter to the lever at the transfer case. One at the shifter where the cable connects and one at the transfer case. If the cable isn't off the transfer case then you will need to get under the center console and replace the plastic clip there.

The clip is only around .57 cents and can only be bought at a dealer. Buy extra just in case.

Has this happen to anyone's JK

So i'm with my girl about to hit the small trails by my house. I go to switch into 4x4 low. When i got to neutral, it felt like the cable disconnected from transfer case, leaving me in neutral. I could not move out of neutral with the shifter knob and had to get out and under the car. So then i had to manually move it with my hand to get back into drive(which was a pain and burned my self a bit with the exhaust). Was wondering if this has happened to anyone and what did it end up being? I checked the next day to see if the cable had snapped, but it didn't. Any ideas?
