|starving agent||i am new to the jeep thing....my daily driver has 18 wheels, so i have to ask. what is an sye ? this weekend my wife and i are removing the tranny in our bran used 87 wrangler so of course i had to read your post. i will be on my back in the gravel because my garage is providing shelter to my other 2 projects, 64 falcon convertible and a 64 IH tractor. thanks for the post.|

Work is kind of slow from now until May so I think I will go ahead and finish my list of cosmetic upgrades. Today I ordered:
-Bestop Trailmax II front seats
-Bestop Trailmax II rear fold & tumble seat
-New seatbelts front and back
-New carpet(My carpet is about 18 months old, but I am not happy with some of the cuts I made around the roll bars so I am replacing)
-TAG pocket flares(My rears rub off road & I do not like the cut look)
-Interior door panels(one has a tear in it)
I'm anxious to finish my interior so it looks like it did in '94! Then I AM DONE with this thing. (With the exception of the SYE/CV shaft at some point)

So after several wheeling trips I begin to hear the U joints. Replaced them, thinking they sure did wear out quickly. Then the first time I drive the Jeep after replacing them the vibrations that I was feeling at the top of 3rd gear were GONE! I think what happened was I failed to seat one of the snap rings so I never was really "lined up", causing the vibrations & wearing out those needle bearings so quickly. So now that I have my U joints installed correctly there is no vibration. I'm still wanting to install a SYE w/ CV shaft sometime though... for the sake of getting that transfer case back up where it belongs.

Jeep is doing great since the tranny & 8.8 swap. I have been off road about 3 times(just short little solo trail runs). I've enjoyed driving it on the highway as well... top speed 84 mph.
After off roading the last time noticed my D30(front) dripping a little gear oil out onto the steering knuckle... Took it back to East Coast Gear Supply and they replaced the seal. No more leak. It was a bit of a hassle to have to go back up there, plus they still have not sent my passenger side e-brake cable yet. They build a great axle, but you gotta stay on them to follow up on stuff.

Picked up Blue from ECGS today where they re geared my D30 to 4.10. Going off road with my father tomorrow.

|billy_YJ||bled the brakes, then took it on an "official" test ride. 1st gear seems really short... Starting out as soon as I release the clutch it's time to shift to 2nd. I am getting some minor vibrations at the end of 3rd, but smooths on out and stays that way up to 77mph(the fastest I was comfortable going). What I love is being able to use 5th on the highway.|

Update: Mission complete!
Picked up the correct flange adapter today. Also grabbed the recommended gear oil(Lucas 75 or 85-140), and some U joints on the way home.
I was done in no time!
(still need to bleed the brakes & put on the passenger side e-brake cable when it gets here)
Went for a ride and I forgot just how much power I lost when going to the 33's with out changing the gear ratio. 4.10 is PERFECT for 33's. I can't wait to get the D30 geared to match in the next couple weeks.

|Franklin3||Wow great thread. Read it from begining to end. Accidently stumbled across it on another thread. It makes me want to do more trouble shooting to make sure my prob is tranny. Ive been on ebay looking for a week know. My trouble is im haveing a hard time shifting into 2nd and grinding in 3rd. But its not all the time. Sometimes it shifts nice. Any ideas? If it is the tranny im going to use this thread as a guide!|

Everything went pretty quick until it was time to connect the drive shaft. I somehow got a 1330 adapter flange(for fords), when I should have a 1310 adapter flange(by spicer).
I was totally bummed because I was excited to finish this thing up & drive it to work tomorrow.
To finish up the swap I need to:
add passenger side e brake cable(when it arrives)
connect drive shaft(picking up correct adapter tomorrow)
fill rear diff, check levels in tranny & transfer case

They only had one of the emergency brake cables in stock(driver side), so I put it on. The other side will go on when it comes

Here it is!
Left work early to pick it up & jumped right in as soon as I got home. I can't believe I actually grabbed this thing alone & carried it from my truck about 15' to my rolling cart! Obviously I was excited.
I like the ECGS tag. Tells me they are proud of the work. Everything looks great with the exception of some paint begin to come off in some spots while handling it.

Here we go again...
So back to my tranny swap I mean rear axle swap...
I pulled the D35 tonight in anticipation of taking delivery of the remanufactured Ford 8.8 on Friday after work.
Since I do not have the skills of Hoosierbird & BlackedoutYJ I ended up purchasing a "bolt on" from East Coast Gear Supply here in Raleigh. Sadly, I ended up spending a little more than I wanted because the 8.8's @4.10 are in high demand(Damn Jeepers). To get a 4.10 I had to purchase all new gears, because all the used 4.10's were TAKEN So when I get it I will have all new gears, bearings, pads, rotors, etc. I'm pretty excited.

From what I have learned the D35 w/ 33's is a time bomb if you do any off roading. I heard a popping sound coming from what I thought was the transmission a couple times off road... then on the way home from that trail ride... a BIG POP and that was all she wrote. After pricing new gears in the D35, it's just not worth it since I plan to keep ole "Blue" forever, so I am taking this opportunity to upgrade the rear axle
