rjeepr The tranny has a plate rivited on it that has a date nov 22/88. Everything looks the same too.

banks316 Are both the trans the same? Cause if there not trying to install the wrong shifter would cause it not to shift. The 88 came with the BA-10 and he might have gave you an AX-15, or worse AX-5 which will not work with the 4.2l.

88 yj 5 speed issues

Just got an 88 yj. 6cyl 5 speed. The tranny in it was only able to go into 2 and R. Guy gave me another tranny with it. Said "paid 100 bucks guy said it was good" the tranny I got with it was missing the shifter lever. I took the shifter out the old tranny put it in tje second tranny and it wont shift at all. Is there a way to test if I got a good tranny before I install it? Should I be able to shift a tranny that's not in a jeep? Any info will help.
