|Hard_Knox_Jeepsta||I've pulled every vaccuum hose and sprayed and found 1 section that needed replace at the valve cover...but havent pulled the IAC or the TPS........ those were next on the list. Most of it is when it starts up, then goes back to what I think is the correct idle speed..... but I'm new to the jeep scene so I may just be looking for stuff. Thanks for the help!!|

#1 is a bad ground.
#2 check for a vacuum leak at the manifold to. Spray carb cleaner around any vacuum ports, the intake and throttle body, if the idle drops you found your leak. Also may want to pull the IAC out and clean it and the passageways. A sticking IAC could be the culprit.
#3 doubt it's the pump, could be lifters or timing belt.

just bought a '97 and...
just got a '97 2.5..... Not a perfect Jeep, but good enough to drive 5 miles per day!! 3 issues that someone may be able to help with:
1.) tail lights ...... wiring seems fine after ripping it all out and inspecting... still have a issues with dimming on the driver side
2.) checked all vaccuum hoses... no leaks engine idles almost at 2k rpms, but will then settle around 1k rpms
3.) ticking noise from what sounds like front oil pump
anything will help at this point. my first jeep hopefully not the last!
