Here is a video I shot recently.
With the regular side marker lights (normal bulbs), the modification outlined above works perfectly.
After I changed my side marker lights to LED, they will only flash if the parking/running lights are on. They will not work at all if the lights are not on.
While I'm OK with this, others may not be but I just thought I'd illustrate how this mod works if you change to LED side markers. I think, I'm not 100% sure, but I think I can use my Superchips programmer to turn on the parking/running lights as "DRL's". That would fix this situation but I've not had time to check it out yet.

A quick "back story" -
I used to have the stock lights in the fenders and when I cut my fenders, I tucked the lights up and under. I later decided that I didn't like the reduced visibility of the stock lights tucked up there. With the bumper that I have, I decided I could put LED's in the ends. The LED's I used provide GREAT visibility from a lot of different angles.

So is there an easy way to get this to work with LED bulbs as replacements? Maybe cutting the second wire and putting it somewhere?
Would it only not work with the marker as led or it wouldn't work even with the front signals as led?

Diodes (as in light emitting diode - LED) are electrical 'one-way valves'. This side marker trick relies on changing back and forth which lead is the ground to make the marker blink. A straight diode would prevent reversing the direction of flow of electricity.
It could be that some LED fixtures have circuitry to allow them to function without regard to polarity - then they should work, but otherwise, not. The LED backup lights I have only work if plugged in in the right polarity - IIRC..

Why won't this mod work with LEDs?

|mikedboyd||I just did the 2-wire mod (just cut the existing wires to the marker light and merge them in with the turn signal wiring). quick and easy and seems to work as advertised.|

Did mine during lunch also. This is a Fun Mod! It'd cheap, it's fun, it's fast and it's visible. It just might keep someone from walking or driving into your Jeep! Thanks to OP and others who documented well. Works exactly as outlined on my '14 JKU Rubicon.

Just this this mod on my lunch break in my driveway. Took ~30 minutes, that includes removing the grille, reinstalling it, and putting away tools.
Thanks OP for the great writeup, and the poster on Page 1 of this thread with all the pictures! I'd read through it a few times before, but hesitated to do the mod... but after taking off the grille and seeing what y'all were talking about - easy peasy!
I didn't disconnect the battery - or subsequently blow a fuse or bulb - I just made sure not to turn on interior or exterior lights until all the connections were made. I used the blue (16ga I believe) 3M quick connector thing-a-ma-bobs, crimped it closed with some pliers, tested the lights, then used electrical tape to cover the connection (and the exposed 1/2" of black wire from the side marker connector to the Jeep).
Quick, painless, and a noticeable safety improvement (I hope)! Definitely worth the few bucks in connectors and 30 minutes of my time.

|SoCarJeep||Mod works great. It adds to the style and looks nice at night. Two wire mod is good because it works with you lights off during the day. Conect both wire into signal wire. Flashes wag wag when lights are on and the same time when the lights are off.|

Here's my contribution. I followed the wires back to a place where they can be neatly spliced together without draping any wires around:

Did the signal mod today. Used the splice/solder method, everything came out as expected.
Much easier to do if you remove the grill. When picking the wire to tap into remember it's the one of the three that is farthest from the black wire in the signal plug. On the driver side that wire is on the bottom, on the passenger side that wire is on top.

Just did the side light/turn signal mod last weekend to my 2014 JKS and it went just fine. Was able to do the work through the fender well without removing the grill. The turn signal plug can be removed from the parking/turn signal light as it's in full view via the front fenders. Following the aformentioned cutting/reconnecting and so forth went just fine and the side turn signals are a definate benefit under certain circumstances. I'd do Muth blinker mirrors if they had them, but alas no luck. I like to make every reasonable effort to keep people from crashing into me. Interesting that this feature was standard on many cars back in the muscle car era.

|cueball13||I skimmed through this thread and like the idea of the mod, but te alternating blink pattern when the headlights are on bother me. Is there any way to have the side marker blink in unison with each condition (lights on, lights off, etc)?|

|918dad||Since this is supposedly factory on a European JK, is there any way we can do it here with factory parts and no splicing?|

Don't know why Jeep decided this wasn't a necessary thing.

do you worry about voiding a warranty doing things like this, or things like this will not effect it?

Jk Jeep side marker light blinker MOD - YouTube
|01-16-2013 07:21 PM|
It worked. I did the sidemarker mod earlier today. So now.
1. Lights off turn signal on - front turn signal and fender marker blink.
2. Fog lights on- fog light and fender marker are on but not front marker. Fronts blink when signal put on as well as fender.
3. Headlights and fogs on - head lights fogs and fender marker turn on but not front marker. Fronts and signal blink when turn signal engaged.
Only thing I did was clip the middle wire. I think legally I am still fine with the fender markers coming on

|jmcdolej||What if I cut the middle wire?|
|01-16-2013 02:32 PM|
|jmcdolej||Is there a way to take this one step further? As in turn signal and fender flare light only turn on for turn signals, but not with headlights or fogs????|
