jsears A steering stabilizer is there just to correct bump steer. The reason why the SS masks Death Wobble is because it can absorb some of the side to side shakes of trackbar/axle.

I guess the question would be, is it just a wobble/shimmy or is it an actual Death Wobble? Death Wobbles are caused by loose bolts, damaged components and improper installation.

If it is actual Death Wobble the leading culprit is typically your trackbar. On my JK (might be different on your Jeep) the trackbar attaches on the frame on the driver's side and to the axle on the passenger side.

The purpose of the trackbar is to center the axle on the frame. If there was no trackbar on your Jeep and you turned your steering wheel, the whole front frame would shift, so there is a huge force that is applied to the trackbar in driving and steering.

Some ways that the trackbar can become damaged is that bolts that hold the trackbar are loose in their bolt holes, or the bolt holes are wallowed out, the bushing at the trackbar ends are damaged, the axle side bracket maybe loose, or that the bushing are all twisted up.

Typically what you want to do is loosen all of your bolts, rocks the vehicle/suspension back and forth and from side to side. Then Re-torque all of your bolts to spec. After about 75 miles re-torque all of your bolts to spec and then after do it every oil change or heavy wheeling trip.

rockhard98 is pretty much spot on.. For added help I'm sure the guys at 4wheelparts would look at the Jeep and show you underneath what you will need to do as well. rockhard98 Just un bolt the shock from the front of the jeep and bolt the new one in it's place.. Might have to put a bushing in but that should come with the shock if it requires it...

06-WranglerSport And how complicated is the replacement process? I'm extremely green, no real mechanical abilities to speak of (yet!)

Outdoors If you have the stock stabilizer, and you had someone look at it already.
Then I would upgrade the steering stabilizer for sure. Even running stock tires, I would at least get the Procomp Unit for 34.99. 4wheelparts on 82nd, they have them in stock usually.
Or step up and get an OME unit for a little more money but well worth it.
Either unit should do the job for your Jeep. Compare even the Procomp to the stock unit it's amazing to see the difference in shock size.
Just put one of those bad boys on there and tell us how it handles.. Good Luuck.

06-WranglerSport So schwab's recommended replacing the the steering stabilizer, but all the research I've done says that the stabilizer will mask a different problem in most cases not actually fix anything. Thoughts?

Threw new tires on it, which made a difference for sure, but it's gotten better than worse again on it's own before, so jury's still out for me. It's only been 2 days. Thanks!

Outdoors My advice, Have Les Schwab as mentioned earlier by "WMac" look at it for free. (estimate)...

jsears It's common in the JK's to have your track bar bracket hole get hollowed out. Once that happens you need to weld a good Grade 8 washer to it.

It's a good reminded but stock or lifted be sure to check and make sure everything is torqued to spec.

06-WranglerSport Nope, no lift, totally stock. Thank you guys for the help, I appreciate it. I'll try looking at it, but I am not sure I'll know what I'm seeing. I'll do some more googling first for sure!

WMac X2 what Rockhard said.

is it lifted?
is it a short arm lift over 3" ?

Check the tie rod ends as well. any les schwab tire center will take a look for free and tell you whats wrong

rockhard98 Makes sents... Generally the biggest cause of death wobble is in your track bar or track bar bushing. The track bar keep your axel centered under the jeep. If the bushing is bad, it allows the axel to wobble side to side a little. Which is where the DW comes from.

How ever if your not sure what your looking for may be better to take it to a pro. It may be one of the most comon reasons, but other componets can cause it as well.

A little reading and if it is the track bar bushing? Its a easy fix you can do with basic tools.

Bushing probly run no more then 25 bucks if even that and maybe 2hrs to fix, if that. Wheres a shop will probly run 150+. Just to give ya a idea for comparison.

06-WranglerSport Well I've been reading up on my biggest concern, which every seems to be referring to as a "death wobble". It wobbles in the steering column at about 55, and at certain times if I hit a bump just right, it get almost uncontrollable. I also need someone for tune ups and stuff.
