Paranoid Hmmmm, I have an old explorer that is no longer in service. I think I might just pull that rood rack before I have it hauled away. I do have a Hardtop too.

heck no.

if you're willing to crack and damage a $1500+ top, that's your call.

I've been running a junkyard explorer rack on my hard top for a few years now. Having taken the hard top on and off more times than I can count, and I would never even consider trying to use the rack to do anything but support my snowboard.

blkrubi88 I ended up installing the Ford Explorer roof rack a few years ago and like it. I bought a roof basket to go on top and it all works great for luggage and camping gear, which is what I did it for.

I had bought the SRC rack, it was on for a total of 5 minutes before i said couldnt stand it anymore, and it had to go. Ive been checking the Garvin out, but idk.

The reason i ask is because i already have a light bar, and dont feel like re doing it, not opposed to it, just don't care to. I was hoping the Yakima Bars would be good enough to stick over the lights to carry my canoe
I was in the same boat on deciding which rack. Had a light bar also, 4 KC daylighters. Changed it over to an LED light bar and couldn't be happier. See pics in previous post. It was a little bit of work (and money) but worth it. Had to go with function over form. Good luck!!

Roy626 And with the Safari Rack on and soft top up.

Roy626 First question you need to ask yourself is will you ever take the hard top off? If you will the rack comes off with it. I had the same dilemma but I always take the top off in the summer. I ended up going with a Kargo Master Congo Cage and their Safari rack. Now I have a rack with hard, soft or no top. I remove the Safari rack when not needed. You can get mounts for kayaks, canoes, bikes, etc. you can even haul drywall if you want the cage is rated at 500# and I believe it. It's a little expensive but you won't regret it if you decide to take the top off. Good luck!

GoldenEagle How tall does the yakima cross bars sit?
09-18-2011 09:56 PM
jgorm I did the yakima because I already had the stuff for their bars. Its not cheap, but its easy to install. There are plenty of junk yard options. Anything with a flat setup will work.

I just stopped at one of the local junkyards yesterday and picked up an explorer roof rack for mine. That is the same write up I saw a few years ago and decided I wanted to do that to mine, but never got around to it.

sell33 That is exactly what I want. Thanks for the idea doc. Does yours handle a decent amount of weight alright?

sell33 Do you have any pictures by chance? thats what i am hoping to find if i go to the junkyard, hopefully with rails and all. thanks!

doclouie The rack that I have on top of my Jeep is off a Ford Explorer and works really well. The PO pulled it out of a salvage yard for like $10.

sell33 I know....But I am thinking a kayak would strap right onto the roll cage pretty easily if I have the top off. But I am going to have to find a decent rack I don't want it to be a cheap shitty rack, especially since its so permanent. Might just have to save up for the Yakima rack.

Xjman1 I did not buy mine, it was installed when I bought the Jeep. It is a Defender rack and has proven its use on trips to TruckHaven. Not sure how much it cost but it is mounted by drilling holes in the hard top. I do like the the mount, however do not like the fact that when the hard top comes off so does the rack. Also, if I remove the rack from the hard top to mount a tub mounted roof rack, I will now have holes in my hard top. Guess I am saying think it over as it is a one way trip.

sell33 Good god I feel like an idiot. Great Idea. A buddy of mine owns a junkyard....lol. Thanks!

Anyone have any idea what kind of weight a hard top will hold? And whether or not drilling through it to mount a rack would cause any issues?

sell33 Yakima 8001616 - YAKIMA Hard Top Roof Track Rack for 07-12 Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited JK 4 Door - Quadratec

This is basically what I'm looking for, just wonder if there are any alternatives that are a little cheaper...I'm a broke college student (and I just bought a new shotgun) so it may have to wait awhile if I want this one lol

Aftermarket rack for a hard top?

Anyone know of a decent rack that can be installed on a hardtop? Also preferably fairly reasonably priced. I don't intend to put a lot of weight on the top ever, but I figure it could handle the weight of a canoe or kayak. Ideally I am thinking of some sort of rack that is simply two crossbars.

Any suggestions?
