Same here. Rancho 5000's on my Rancho 2.5" lift because I like the stiffer ride that they offer plus I find them much softer than my old ride, 77 Powerwagon with 6" lift and Rough Contry shocks (believe me, they are aptly name rough country)

InvertChaos Just got off the phone with Dirk at DPG Off-road, looks like ill be going with the OME sport shocks! Thanks for all of the input!

I would still prefer something a bit softer in the rear when I'm riding empty, but with gear, or people, its pretty damn nice. Its not bad by any means, but my end goal if for the jeep to ride like a caddy, driving over pot holes without hardly moving. The roads out here in san diego suck really bad. I had RC 2.2s on my last TJ and if you call them a 10/10 on harshness, these are about a 3. I'd do it again, especially if I wanted another cheap fix.

Yep there is a knob on the bottom of the shock that is easily accessible.

I really like the way the Jeep rides, and it's better than stock, IMO. It is a somewhat stiff ride, however, I don't think it bounces all over the road. But I've never ridden in a Jeep with the RC 2.2 shocks so I can't make a direct comparison. I also have the HD OME coils so mine may be stiffer than yours with the same shocks.

I bought the new OME Nitro Sport shocks (Nitro Charger are the originals) and they are the long travel version, FWIW.

How would you describe the ride? Like over small bumps in the road I feel like the Jeep goes all over the place. Are those dampened pretty well?

Ageless Stranger I've heard good things about the Rancho shocks in other threads, but I've never ran them personally, and don't know anyone who does. I have OME shocks and love them. Sounds like you can't go wrong either way.

Arch Stanton I just checked Rancho's website and couldn't find their $100 rebate for the shocks. It must have expired at the end of last month. I'm sure that they'll have another promotion come December.

jgorm I'm pretty happy with my JK rubicon shocks that I picked up for $60 shipped for all 4. Its a great cheap shock that fits with very minor modifications. I might give the 9000s, or some bilstein 5100s a try sometime soon.

When I run it on the highway I put it half way between the two. The thing I like the most is I can choose my setting. All of what you read is spot on including the rear shock mounts giving some trouble.

So glad Sears install was free, I went with the RS5000 but the 9000 I here nothing but good things about

Shocks, shocks, shocks

Yep, another shock thread

I have a 2004 TJ with a Rough Country 2.5" SA suspension lift, 1.25" body lift, and 33x12.50x15 tires. I've been happy with the setup for 8 months or so, but I am starting to not be able to ignore how rough it rides. I should have listened when everyone said that RC shocks SUCK. It's my DD so I would like it to ride nicer and not jar me all over the place on these crappy northern VA roads, and I'm going to college soon so it would be great to have a smoother ride to where ever I go.

So the question is, which shocks provide a stable ride that's not too firm that you jump around all over the place, yet soft enough that little bumps aren't felt as much, that also does well off road.

I have heard nothing but praise from both OME shocks and Rancho9000XL shocks. I am working on a part time high school budget here, so the most bang for the buck is a necessity.

Finally, how hard is this to do yourself? I have read that sometimes the rear shock mounts twist off due to age and corrosion, I think the guys that installed my lift even had some issues with them. But since the current shocks have only been on there for 8 months they should be okay right? I have a basic set of tools (ratched wrenches, hand wrenches, torque wrench, I can get my hands on a jack, etc.), and have only done basic mainenance such as rotating tires, changing engine oil/diff fluid, installing a bolt on skid plate, etc. Would I be able to handle putting on new shocks?
