|Peevee||I bought one brand new in 1989 it was a short bed 4x4 pioneer edition with the 4.0 and automatic transmission. I wish I still had it. I sold it when it had 178,000 miles and it still ran perfect.|

Had I been more familiar to Jeeps, I think that I would have just done what I needed to get a differant tranny. That being said, my MJ was driven by a teenager who did some REALLY stupid stuff in it (some I am still hearing about). (i.e. was getting the oil changed in the company truck, heard tires screaming, saw smoke, then watched my MJ emerging from said cloud of smoke, with a riced out Honda on it's tail...)(yes, he denied it, at first). Not only did my son street race, but also (I am finding out) did quite a bit of mudding...but he doesn't understand how to go slow on trails, it was all about power slides and fishtailing. So even though the transmission was the weakest point of the truck, it still didn't get treated well.
Like I said before, I wish that I still had it!

how bad is the pugeout trans?
there a local one for sale that has that trans and it's brand new, just replaced (which i guess says something about it )

|mr4x4||I never had a problem my mj now has 250,000 miles on it and it runs as good as new no smoke it doesnt burn oil it runs just as well as my tj does with 70,000 on it|

|jjseel||Cool truck! However, I too experienced problems with the slave cylinder, and mine had a Peugot transmission that was weak as water.|

I had a 1990 Comanche 2wd, 4 cyl and 4 sp stick shift.
The vehicle was great but I had 1 re-occuring mechanical problem. The slave cylinder kept going out and it is housed inside the bell housing. A tranny drop was needed for repair.
I don't know if that has ever been corrected or what is needed. I sold mine in 1998 when I bought my Dodge pickup.

|AzTJ||just like with a Cherokee, 87+ are the good years with the 4.0L and better. Make sure the sub-frame is straight and that rust is to a minimum. You can strengthen the whole thing with stiffeners, but that will add a lot of weight fast. I have one here, just need to fix the fuel pump and then then fun starts.|

look for the metric ton package (hard to find) thats the towing package it has the dana44 in the rear
if its a standard you want the ax15 tranny
heres mine right after the new paint job it has a 5.5 in. lift and 33's

Buying a Comanche?
What would one look out for when buying a jeep comanche? any "bad" years/motors/or/trannys??
