Im going to be attempting this later in the week and I havent found a write up per say yet but this last post helped me alot. I guess my only question yet is what kind of cable are you using in the home made kits, about how long do I need(I wanna get my parts together first) .
On the "store bought kits" does the throttle"lock in place" like it would with a bike shifter or no?

This is the hand throttle kit I used... RE1000 - HAND THROTTLE - Rubicon Express
What the pic doesn't show also included in their kit is a very key mounting bracket for the throttle-body end that makes its installation a lot simpler.
Also, there's a pretty cool easy way to attach the cable to the throttle linkage... go look at your throttle body... see the plastic snap-on part that the throttle cable uses to snap onto the throttle linkage? You can attach the hand throttle's cable the same way. You can get the same snap-on plastic part by buying a throttle return spring from your local Jeep dealership, it's only a buck or two. Cut the spring off and run the cable through it. Hold the cable in place with a small crimp-on part you can buy at Home Depot/Lowes in the aisle where they sell wire cable.
Also, I mounted my 5-speed's so the lever faced rearward as shown below. It's a lot easier to work the lever with a manual transmission with your fingertips facing that direction.
You can see the hand throttle was so useful on my 5-speed that I re-used it after converting my last TJ to an automatic transmission.

I agree with lemonbw, something with a spring or release to disengage the throttle is crucial. I had a bike gear selector for a long time and several times my dog hit it or I hit it with a drink coming out of the cup holder. I've never seen the brake handle used as a hand throttle, but its the same idea, with more built in safety.
Also, be sure to temporarily "remove" it prior to getting the jeep inspected, especially if you live in Texas!

I wonder how hard it would be to mount a vernier throttle? I've used them a lot on trucks and they work great.

Ive seen a few guys use bicycle gear selectors for a hand throttle and mount it on the gear shift.

|lemonsbw||I wouldn't recommend using the shifter off a bike I would rather use the brake lever off a bike. I had one rigged up off a shifter and found that when the person brakes in front of you suddenly and you go to depress the clutch (if you have a manual tranny) and brake to stop you get quite the high revs if you aren't paying attention. After that little mishap I stopped using it all together. Something that doesn't stay engaged on it's own in my opinion would be the best option unless you can find something that has some type of quick release in case you have to suddenly stop while using it.|

|BlackedOutYJ||I got a treraflex kit for a tj but works perfectly fine on my yj. Got the whole kit from 4wheelparts.com for like $30 shipped. I have a really good sales guy who hooks me up, maybe it's the ridiculous amount of mo ey I've spent with them but I call him personally and only deal with him. On their site it's like $45. His name is Rene if you wanna give them a shot. The kit is well worth $30|

|yjNY||Ive been wanting to do the same thing for my 87 YJ. personally i would use the bike shifter because it locks to whatever speed you set it to and you can take your hand off it. If you use a brake, then you would have to keep your hand still while moving over rocks or rugged terrain it would almost be impossible to keep your hand still. Whichever you choose, they will both use throttle cable; not too sure how exactly how to connect the throttle cable to the shifter but it shouldnt be too hard to figure out. From what ive read, you start by attaching the shifter or brake to the shifter in a comfortable position then snake the throttle cable with the protective sheathing (whatever you call it) down through through the opening of where the shifter enters the boot, then you work it up into the engine bay and find where the throttle cable from the pedal is to your throttle body or carburetor. There should be a plate or bracket holding the sheathing from moving, if you have enough room, i would drill a hole in that bracket larger than the throttle cable but smaller than the sheathing so that the throttle cable doesn't move past that plate. Its probably easier to understand the write-ups because they have pictures but thats pretty much it. you can adjust the cable in the shifter or brake part to adjust the max idle. You also want to make sure that when you route your throttle cable that theres no kinks or small radius bends because thats going to create friction between the cable and the teflon lined sheathing|

Help with Hand Throttle
I was thinking about making a hand throttle and just had a couple of questions. I know there are some write ups but I need a few specifics. First, if I use either a bike shifter or a brake, do I still wire it the same way, and second, how exactly do I wire it. Thanks!
