Success

I went to the Hardware store and got he hoses and connecters and picked up a bottle of CLR. I hooked everything up and ran just water first and some scale came out so i blew out some of the water with my breath and added the clr waited 5 min and hit it with water and more scale came out. Repeated the process about 5 times then replaced all the hoses and ran the engine. I had the same lukewarm heat till I got about a mile down the road then the heater went completely cold for about 5 seconds then it got hot like it is supposed to.

I will probably flush the whole system in the spring again but for now it is nice to know I will not be a popsicle. Thanks to all you guys for all the advice.

TJNick Sp, i just flushed the heater core this morning and it solved my problem. I came acrossed another posting where the owner unhooked the heater hoses from the core at the firewall and flushed just the core instead of the whole cooling system. like him i did the same, i used clear tubing with hose repair fittings clamped on one end and clamped those hoses to the core at the fire wall. oh the muck that washed out of the core. now i get 140 degree heat coming out of the vents. i think the core is so small that even though i flushed the entire cooling system, it left some sediment in the heater core. by flushing the core directly it removed that sediment and my heat works great.... try it and see, for 20 bucks worth of hose and fittings and about 45 minutes of time its worth a try if you haven't already

Shortpunter I am thinking of adding an aux electric heater. I am not clear of why the heat doesn't work but i know that as the winter gets colder the frost will start to build up. anyone used these and is it work the 40 bucks???

TJNick SP, i have the same problem with my 99, heat is only coming out of the vents at around 70 degrees, my dfroster is colder than that, i can see all the doors moving and have changed Tstat and flushed system. some mornings temps only come out at 60 degrees. i haven' tfound the problem but i have found that keeping the fan on the low speed lets the heat get hotter and as soon as i turn the fan up on high it cools off. (i keep a thermometer in the vent so i can monitor the temperature of the air coming out.) I am starting to think maybe its a vacuum problem. not enough vacuum to hold the blend door in place once the addtional force of the fan being on high is applied. Anyone know how to check that?

Triple88a which setting are you putting the heater on? I'd imagine the one w/ the snowflake for the face and feet together? put it in one of the right 2 settings for your face or feet only with out the snow flake and see if it gets warmer. I have the same problem and it definetly feels warmer on the ones with out the snow flakes since i think my ac compressor kicks in when its on the snowflake settings. Yes i can hear it click on and click off too so...

4.0l sahara 190 is the correct stat. The 4.0 has no bleed valve to bleed out air in the cooling system. So with the engine cold take off the radiator cap and let it run till the stat pops open and the coolent starts to flow let it flow for a few minuts and put the cap back on. That should help bleed out any air. The best way to tell weather it's in side the car or under the hood is to feel the 2 heater hoses are both hot? If booth are hot the coolent system is probally not your prob.

JCS05Rubi Maybe the blend door is acting up or has something jammed in it?

Shortpunter the Thermostat temp is 190 the temp gauge hovers around there. I drove it long distance Friday and got a little more heatbut it was only 35 out. Worried about frosting up this winter more than keeping warm right now. Could it still be the core even though I had good flow when I fluched it out>

debruins hmmmm
well first off hwat was the temp of the thermostat, on the north it should be a 210 one i belive not a 190, but im not totally sure
but 190 is still pretty darn hot!

heater still likewarm- help

third post on this problem. I have lukewarm heat. Thanks to all advice so far. I have changed themostat, The old one was stuck open i believe) flushed heatercore twice( good flow), topped off coolant fluid. The door on the heater moves and it blows somewhat warm heat. The temp guage says it is running around 190-195 I am at a loss, I might try another flush although I don't think that will help. I know there are others on here with similar problems. any advice will help thanks
Tom
