The 4 banger can also have 3.73 gears, not all of them have 4.10s:
The 2.5l manual transmission will have 4.10 gearing
The 2.5l automatic transmission will have 3.73 gearing
And don't buy the 4 cylinder because you think you will get more MPGs; you will be sadly disappointed and left with a gutless vehicle. I'm actually getting 5-7 MPG more out of my '04 4.0l than I ever did out of my 2.5l.

Be aware that the only company that I found that makes drop in chromoly axles for the D35 is Alloy USA. Superior only makes chromoly axle shafts in their c-clip eliminator kits. There is reasons for this. Check out this post for more info.

No, the D35 in my Cherokee has about 400k on it and I have towed and been offroad a lot in it. And by towed, I mean towed cars. I wouldn't try towing a full size truck far, though I have towed them short distances (10 miles) on a car dolly before.
It's been one sturdy vehicle over the years. Really got me hooked on Jeeps. I've had it since 97.
That being said, if I could find a d44 for the TJ for a reasonable price, and the right gearing, I would buy it.

If your looking for MPG, your not going to find it in either the 4 or 6cyl wrangler....
It's a brick on wheels, not designed for MPG.
As for the D35, depends on your use of the jeep and how much you like the skinny pedal. You can get the Super 35 kit to help stregthen it, by removing the C-Clip which is one of the main reasons it has a bad wrap.
Sahara Model TJ's I believe were the only ones that came with a rear D44 or optional rear D44. 03-06 Rubicon models have Front & Rear D44's

The D35 can be a problem if you wheel it beyond its design. In a 4cyl it CAN break, but you have to be heavy on the go pedal or some such to do it. My 97 has one with over 124,000 on it and it is still going strong. When I went to bigger tires, I regeared and put in alloy shafts to strengthen it.
Now having said that, there are other weak links (the tubes) that can be strengthened as well.
If you're buying a used TJ, do what you can to find a D44 equipped model. It's just that much more peace of mind. Now if you already have a TJ with a D35, you need to see which will be a more economical way to go as far as replacing with a D44 or upgrading the D35.
While you cannot find a TJ SE with a D44, you CAN find one with a 4.0L inline 6...

|shrekfx||Honestly from what I hear getting a four sylender really don't change your mpg. They both get bad milage. Remember jeeps are heavy so that small engine has alot of weight to try and move.|

I posted this in another thread, but the D44's are really rare outside of Rubicon's. You wont find one on a 4 Cyl either.
I looked at about 20 TJ's in person and none had a D44. I cant comment on how bad the D35 is, but no chance you'll find a D44

Dana 35 rear really that bad
Im looking to buy a used TJ with a 4cyl and 5 speed. I read allot of bad things about the rear ends being very week. Think its a dana 35 which was the problem.. Heard the entire running gear for a 4 cyl is differnt then for the 6 cyl. Is that true..
Im really looking for MPG more then power.. what say you experts out there
