|doclouie||Shims are spacers on either side of the carrier. Not hard to replace. The real question is how it came apart and that is not very common.|

|doclouie||Looks like a shim to me. If it is a shim there will be more of it in the differential when you pull it apart.|

|06GoldenEagle||i get a magnet stick on the bottom of the housing for a day and then would pull the cover and try to get anything in there out and refill with fresh lube|

|meyers||Best bet is to pull the cover and give it a good once over. I have over 150k on my 2002 with the D44 rear. I have never had anything like that come out of the axle, and I have owned and maintained mine since I drove it off the lot in 2002.|

|TJWenatchee||Might be the remains of the "limited slip clutch". They don't last that long and yet the axle would work fine and sound fine without it.|

Metal on D44 Drain Plug!
Pulled the drain plug on my rear axle (stock D44) and found some metal pieces clinging to it! Aw, crap. Pics attached to this post.
Any idea what this stuff is? Looks like pieces of a large circular metal disk. The metal is thin, maybe 0.02 inches. I know the diff "used to be" limited-slip, but that functionality seems to be pretty worn out now with 112k on the clock. Maybe parts of that mechanism?
Otherwise, no problems with the axle - no noise, etc.
