I did my first oil change at 978 miles. I was planning on it for 500 miles but life intervened. Filter & oil were very clean, no noticeable metal flakes. If anyone cares, my build date was 8/16/11.

alaskanrubi I think the guys and girls that change their own oil for the first time on the 2012 wrangler should post what they found in there oil filter.

I just changed my oil yesterday, I had just less than 900 miles in 2 weeks and there was about 5 or six very small metallic flakes the largest was smaller than a grain of sand.

I feel that that would be better than expected.

Mine was two weeks old at 600 miles. I could care less if you or the oil companies approve of my early oil change to clean out the initial crap in the motor. It cost me all of....oh wait, it was free.

Smart move IMO. The Debris problem is a bit more serious than anything an early OC is going to fix, or they wouldn't be replacing engines. Still any engine that doesn't have freeze-out plugs is more difficult to clean after mfg, so an early oil change is a great idea. Going forward Kudos to Chrysler for catching it early, and I'm willing to bet they have the cleaning method down pat now!

A) Wrangler engines seem unaffected by this particular bad batch.

B) Clearing this up is likely to cost tens of millions, and Fiat is no doubt taking this extremeley seriously. Companies can see sales destroyed for a decade by things like this if the company isn't seen pulling out all the stops to address it.

C) Indications are that they've been able to exactly identfy the number of engines affected, which means they have some kind of very accurate tracking system in place.

He still might get a "bad" engine (in some other way), but I think the odds are extremely slim.

There's that UAW character trait shining through. The stupidest part is that hurting the company hurts them all but I guess that the mentality of people like that missed the day at school they were handing out brains. We see it time and time again with union labor businesses closing shop and moving to low cost regions.

temperedphenix Does anyone think this issue will happen with the engines that are being put into jeeps in the next month or two. Im waiting on mine to be built now, not really sure when it will start but I want to know if its something I have to worry about.

I was responding to someone suggesting the alluminum flakes people have been finding in their filters might be a cause for concern. Apparently, they aren't abnormal for a new engine.

The recall talks about "debris" in the engine, which I'm going to guess is something a little more significant than the alluminum flakes we've been finding.

Metal flakes at 1000 mi change

Even though my trusty manual says change oil by ( I know recommended vs max) at 8000 miles, which seems absurd to me, I found 5-10 1/2 mm flakes in the drain oil at 1000 mi. I plan on changing again at 3000 mi, then maybe at the 8000 mi interval. My plan is more like 5000 mi changes.

Do the Pentastars have a magnetic oil drain plug? Seems like it would be a good idea.
Finding some "Metal flakes" in a new engine breaking in is normal. Those flakes wiping out bearings and ruining an engine are not normal. Chrysler is/was aware of the problem early on, and would not be recalling vehicles if this issue was normal. Dropping the oil and filter early IMO would be a good idea with these engines. A magnetic drain plug is a good idea too. If it doesn't have one get one and put it on when you drop the oil for the first time. JMO

ugotda7 Went to the dealer for some other things, asked about my build date which they pulled from the VIN - 8 Sep 11. They told me they think Wrangler engines are built on a different assembly line which is why they weren't included.

The pictures I'm seeing make the amount of crap we're finding nothing compared to others...

The consensus also seems to be that it's perfectly normal.

Look at the garbage these guys are finding in their new Corvettes:

Search this forum for 'Insight'. You'll find out how to use your VIN to get the entire history of your Jeep's build from order to delivery to dealer. The date it goes to "I" status is the date of build.

Up Hill Bill Chrysler knows the batch of 3.6L engines affected and where they went in the supply chain. If any went to the Toledo Wrangler plant, they would have recalled them. They didn't. Relax. (until they do...)

ugotda7 How do you find the exact date of manufacture? My door sticker has date of manufacture of 9-11. Is that September 11th? They don't put a year? So is it 9/11/2011?

Pat, is there any explanation as to why Wranglers don't seem to be involved?

You beat me to it! Knowing this, I'd drive home from the dealer and dump the oil, and filter, then again at either 500 or a 1000 miles. Safe than sorry in this case. Since Allpar mentioned cleaning issues when the P-Star engine first came out, it appears they might still be having some problems. I'm glad they caught it before it ended up being thousands.

LOL I wouldn't be surprised if some of the 2012 Wranglers become part of the recall. The block is the issue, and the block is the same for all 3.6L Pentastar engines. I'm sure Chrysler will stay on top of this and make the corrections if need be going forward.
