|Cvoan||Just done this but the new switch will not control the fog lights now i can put the old one back on and they will work BUT they stay on All the time hence why i bought a new one Got it from NAPA Part # DL6332 and according to their website it is the right one I put the new one the fog lights will not work Everything else works Fine !! HELP please i am taking this one back and get a new one and hopefully that will fix it if not i dont know then .. Please any suggestions ???|

Wanted to weigh in and thank TJeepman for his original post. My 2001 TJ (I think it's a TJ.. or is that an JK?) had the EXACT problem in that the switch for the fog lights stayed on... which turned on the fog lights... which would drain my battery. I ended up disconnecting the lights by unplugging the connector to each fog light. The "engage the turn signal" fix wouldn't work in the event I valet parked the Jeep or someone other than me drove it.
A quick search of the web and TJeepman's post was easily found. I did however purchase a third-party "contraption" which was HALF THE PRICE of the "real" one... a risk I was willing to make.
I followed the directions and they were perfect. The whole process took some 45 minutes... which included the time to find the required tools... and the third-party replacement unit fit PERFECTLY!
Thank you TJeepman for taking the time to teach me how to fix it on my own. I may have a Masters in Electrical Engineering, but I still struggle on which end of a screwdriver to hold so if I can following his directions and achieve success... ANYONE can!

I know that there are a million threads on various websites describing this problem...and various solutions, including repairing the switch (vs. replacing), but THIS is the post that I found a year or so ago when I had the problem...and I printed it off...and finally got around to doing it today.
Yeah, a year.
Funny story (at least in my opinion), I actually bought the switch assembly off of eBay for 40 beans or so and stuck these instructions in the box...thinking that I would do it some weekend. Then, time passed...and I sort of got used to not having the fog lights...and just never seemed to find the time to do it.
Fast forward to last month. I'm getting my jeep inspected and the inspector states that he is going to have to flunk it...because the fog lights don't work. According to the inspector, if they are on the vehicle, they have to work...or be covered. Since I don't have covers, he's about to flunk me...and I am leaving town for a week the next day. I quickly tried to remember how I had disabled them. I went under the hood and looked in the PDC for what I pulled...and he finds the relay...with a pin intentionally bent up. He was sure that was how I did it...and I had to agree...even though I knew that wasn't it - that was how I disabled the high-beams from turning off my fog lights...but you don't tell the state inspector that. Thus, to get out of there alive, I had to take the fog lights off right there...and then he passed me.
Sigh, oh well, haven't had them in a year...so I drive on.
Today, I'm driving around and my turn signals fail. It definitely seemed like a relay, so I said "today is the day"...and I followed these instructions and slapped in the new switch. Well, I didn't completely follow them. Once I got the switch out I thought that I knew better. So I dropped in the new one and fired it up. Lights? Check. Turn signals? Nope.
Turns out that I didn't read far enough...and didn't realize that the relay didn't come with the switch...so then it's off to the auto parts store for a new relay...and THEN I was in business...after I hunted down what fuse I pulled over a year ago to disable the fog lights.
So easy a caveman could do it. Just read ALL of the instructions.
BTW, if you are doing it, I suggest that you pick up a new relay and drop it in while you are in there. If yours is still good, you have time to order one off of the internet...for 5 or 10 beans...instead of the 24 beans that I had to pay when buying locally after it completely failed.

|Hardermods||No the steering wheel does not need to come off to replace the switch. Look through this thread and I did a write-up with pics on replacing the switch Switch on Backorder Some where on here someone did a writeup on actually taking the switch apart and fixing that lever that gets wore out but I cannot find it right now.|

One of the issues I need to address on my new to me 03 TJ.. Fog lights staying on..
So what I'm reading I don't have to remove the steering wheel, is that correct? If I don't have to, it seems the job would be relatively easy.
Going to hit Autozone today for the switch if you guys tell me the wheel doesn't have to come off.

|biker328||I just put a new one in about a week ago. Got it from Napa it was 75 with freight and has a 36month or 36,000 mile warranty. Pretty easy to install but the wire harness was completely shot so I just hard wired it, making sure to write down the correct wires. Works awesome now. I also did all new LED's in dash H vac and shifter. I feel like I got a new jeep ha|

I replaced mine after reading your write-up. My locay dealer wanted $214 for the switch. I went to advance auto parts and got one for $83.29.
Very easy to install, just make sure you unlock the red tab by prying it backwards toward the dash GENTLY.
Thanks for saving me $$$ by not taking it to the stealership!!!

Low beam(unless you did the mod) powers the fog lamp circuit.
If they stay on with the headlights off, most likely it's the switch in the column that's bad.
I'll be replacing the switch in "ours" shortly, not for the fog lamps, this one has decided it's no longer going to cancel the turn signals after a turn.
No more driving in the left lane with the right signal on or visa versa.

Just reading through these threads...
I have started having my fog lights coming on accidentally. It's as though the push-in feature works, but it's a bad connection and won't stay "locked."
I guess I need a new turn signal switch? Or any other suggestions??

That new switch is available from Advance Auto Parts for $41.97.
Part number S12419. It is just like the original, but it works and
has a year warranty.

I just noticed my fog lights staying on, so I'll be doing this soon as well
I did find the simple solution for turning off the fog lights tho. I just disconnected the electrical plugs to the individual lights under the fenders. It doesn't matter if the circuit is energized or not since there are no lights connected to create a load.

|Taznc||I had the exact same problem with my fog lights. They slowly got worse and would only turn off when the left turn signal is engaged. I had to get jumped because I forgot one day and they have not worked at all since. Thanks for the write up, I am going to look at it and see if I can get my fog lights working and all.|

Multi Function Light Switch - Installation
Problem: Fog lights wanted to stay on. This problem has been going on for a couple of months off and on, but more persistent lately. Recently, easiest way to keep them off, when parked anywhere, or overnight, was to engage the left turn signal (push stalk down).
Decisions: To replace switch or install a toggle switch in line to control the fog lights. Decided to get a new switch. Ordered it from a local Dealership on Thursday, arrived from Montreal on Monday, picked it up yesterday. About supper time I decided to take the cover off to see what things looked like to work on. Once I got started, I kept going and took about an hour to complete the job. Took my time.
Tools Required (in my case):
- Philips screwdriver to remove two hidden screws holding the top and bottom sections of the cover on and to each other.
- Torx 15 screwdriver for two screws holding the multi function light switch "contraption" to the steering column.
- Torx 10 screwdriver for two small screws holding the wiper stalk/switch to the "contraption".
- Flat blade screwdriver for any prying that might be needed.
- I set my front wheels to be straight ahead just in case the position of the steering wheel might affect something.
- thought about disconnecting the battery but didn't. One should do that though.
- dislodged (not totally remove) rubber grommets around light stalk and wiper stalk by squeezing top against bottom. They just clip in place and dislodge easily.
- using the Philips screwdriver, removed the two hidden (in holes) screws underneath that hold the top cover section to the bottom section. Put the screws aside.
- squeezed the top relative to the bottom to unclip the cover sections from each other. This required a few attempts since I didn't know what I was dealing with. Removed those and put them aside.
- disconnected the electrical plug from the "contraption". That required moving the red lock tab back about 1/4" with the flat blade screwdriver and then pressing on the grey tab just beyond it (to unlock that) and wiggling the plug loose. That was easy compared to most automotive electrical plugs that seem to defy logic.
- unscrewed the two near vertical screws that hold the "contraption" to the steering column. It has a rounded portion that fits down over the top of the steering column. Put those screws aside.
- unscrewed the two small screws holding the wiper stalk/switch to the "contraption". Sled the two sections apart and let the wiper stalk/switch hang.
- removed the "contraption" plus the grommet (mentioned above) and the relay from it, both for installation on the new "contraption". The relay connections aren't that obvious, but all five blade openings are there when looking at the piece closer. They are right next to where the wiper stalk/switch fits in.
- installed the relay and put a piece of electrical tape over the top of it to help keep it in place (probably unnecessary but there was paper stuck to it before).
- reverse of the above except I reinstalled the grommets at the very last.
- had to work with the top and bottom cover pieces somewhat to get them to clip together tightly.
- when I reconnected the electrical plug, the emergency hazard lights and door open alarm started their performance. Turned lights and hazards off and all was well (quiet).
- no need to disconnect the wiper stalk/switch electrical, just let in hang for the time being until it's reinstalled.
- types of screws may vary from what I experienced. I have seen cap scews holding the "contraption" to the steering column in photos.
- I use the word "contraption" because that's basically what it is and is much bigger than I expected. It's 6.5 inches across (not including stalk), centering on, and fitting over, the steering column. It's 3.5 inches high, next to the stalk, and about 3.0 inches thick.
