|aquaman||Thanks for all of the advice. I took the cheap route and changed the fuel filter, While doing so I uncovered a disconnected vacuum line. I went ahead and changed the fuel pump since I had already started doing so and reattached the vacuum line. No problem since. All of your comments were helpful.|

If you plan to keep the OEM Carter, then you need to keep all of the emissions equipment in shape and working well. This is one of the big reasons many people (including me...) dump the Carter. What many people thing is a problem with the carb is actually a problem (or series of problems) with the spaghetti mess of emissions equipment on the early YJs (and late CJs for that matter). Even one sensor, switch, or vacuum hose out of whack can wreck the whole deal and make the computer take a dump, causing problems.
Despite what some people say, keeping it all running well can be done, and it's really not too hard - just somewhat tedious. You need to know this information...
...up and down, inside and out. When I first got my 1990 with the Carter still installed, the information on that page was a lifesaver.

http://www.jeeptech.com/engine/carter.html Try this fix, worked on my 88 wrangler. Doesn't take long to verify. I was doing the three legged shuffle at all the stops and lites. Put 3 thousand miles on since and no problems. Don't like the carter carb , but is working fine for now

|aquaman||Gramps, I located the correct article and the '87 does indeed have an inline filter. Thanks for the advice. I will try that first thing in the morning. I was sweating the thought replacing the pump assemby.|

The original owner has said that the Carb was replaced by a jeep dealer and was an original "new" part (OEM). This was done less than one year ago and less than 5k miles ago.
Grandpa, not to doubt you but other articles I have read say that the fuel pump and filter are on the same assembly, inside the gas tank. Is there an inline one as well?

Nothing like some family advice..haha... Thanks Dad and Grandpa for the comments! The original owner said the Carb was replace. I am waiting on them to Fax me a reciept so I can tell me what type and when It was done.
In the mean time: Any thoughts on the fuel filtter? Where it may be . etc..

|daddyjeep||Stop wasting money on premium fuel. Your Jeep does not need it. As Grandpa said, the stock carb is always a weak spot on these Jeeps. There are some fixes, but you would be better off replacing the carb with a weber or MC2100. If you want to spend some money go with a fuel injection system like the kit from Howell. If you do a google search you can find articles on how to use junk yard GM parts to replicate the Howell kit.|

87 jeep YJ stalling at low RPMs
My 87 Jeep Wrangler 6 cyl has started idleing rough and stalling at stop lights or idle. I run premium fuel. Any idea before I take her in for repair?
