Can anybody ID the wheels, tires, and bumpers on this J8? I could research it I suppose, but some of you may know off hand. Pondering taking the jeep in this direction . . .

3JKs1H1 Consider a 4BT Cummins swap.

Not for the faint of heart.

These motors power those big/boxy FritoLay bread trucks. They are put in a lot of conversions. Turbo and intercooled, they require about 3 wires to get them going. Very reliable.

I sold a new 4L80e tranny to a guy who installed a 4BT into his Defender D90.

You need a few extra parts, like a Compushift transmission computer, but you could probably do the conversion yourself for 6-8K.

4BT's and 6BT's are heavily supported designs, easier to install than their common rail counterparts.

nvkid I saw a j8 at a test track. the motor was a 4 cylinder from belgium and it had leaf springs.

Wolf1 Thanks for the vid Hill. You're right, it's the 2.8 turbodiesel that sets it apart. I really dug some of Overland Journal's mods too, especially the FLIR color thermal night vision camera and the Habitat system!
Me, I'll take the armored weapon-mounted one please.....

MTH I want--badly. This is about the only vehicle I'd trade my JK for.

Of course, if I ever have this kind of cash to blow on a Jeep, I'll necessarily have enough to toss a Hemi in my JK, complete all other desired mods, AND pick up a J8.

Hilldweller That $50K gives you the beefy suspension and a diesel; a built Rubicon is still a gasoline engine.
The J8 will do all your wheeling, take you anywhere you want to go, and give you 28 mpg in mixed driving.

John412 The air intake system is Intresting to me. I would like to see what is involved in that. I wondered why they didn't just use there snorkel system with a pre filter. I know my aev with pre filter captures Alot of sand and debris, alot of guys I wheel with use the same system with the ram air scoop. I don't trust that set up with the water and sand that I frequent. It Obvisouly works but I'll keep my pre filter, plus it's gets alot of funny looks and attention on top of being more functional in my opinion. I know it doesn't have the durabilty of the heavy plastic ram air scoop but I have had my pre filter in some tight trails with the trail rash to prove it and it hasn't broke yet. I'm gonna get a spare housing to keep in my one of my gear totes just in case though.

You go it. The phrase I saw AEV use was that it's structural parts and brakes are essentially from a dodge ram, it's also got a much beefier suspension (you can see the rear leaves in Hilldweller's pics--that might be dodge ram too, I'm not familiar enough to know), D60 rear like you said and a D44 front, the body panels are reinforced, etc. There are also engine modifications beyond just tossing in the euro diesel or US Hemi--the air intake for example is apparently outfitted to withstand a five hour blackout sandstorm, which would of course kill most stock intake set ups.

It is literally the same set up Jeep sells to governments for military applications. Hence the "milspec".

Notably, unlike a rubi, it doesn't have lockers. It comes with an LSD in the rear and open diff in front.

I have no doubt you could dump $20k extra into a rubi and outwheel it. I don't think you'd outLIVE it though!

John412 I know there are a few obvious differences in the j8 compared to a stock rubicon. The Dana 60 and the j8's one ton rating make it Obvisouly a Beefier jeep. I can only assume there are alot more welds and better construction throughout the jeep and that's the biggest difference I have a distinct plan for my jk and figure for 35000 it will be able to wheel with the best if them. I do not plan on Dana 60 on 37's as there not needed but what I have designed for this jeep will be sweet.

I think that's the number I saw in an online write-up by AEV. You're probably right though. I'd hope for $50k and expect $60k.

No doubt. But would it last as long under extreme conditions? Would it handle a beating as well? I think that's where the J8--supposedly--does so well.

Much heavier duty than the standard wrangler. I've seen you guys talking 50000$ for this but I think it's a bit more than that by the time you take delivery and drive that off the "lot". I feel a well equipped wrangler will out wheel this thing for alot less than 50000 invested.

Hilldweller I pinged Dave and asked if there's a possibility of a diesel kit for our Jeeps.
I don't have the scratch for a J8 right now....

And yeah, Scott's J8 is a celebrity perk. But he does use it often, hard, and for real.

Does that really count though, or is that more like Nike giving a pro basketball player prototype shoes? Have you seen or heard of anyone not media-related getting one simply by ordering, paying, and taking delivery? Even the J8 blogs on AEV's own site are mostly just people asking about when they can get one.

Given what folks are willing to pay Burnsville or AEV for hemi-equipped Jeeps, I'd expect J8s at around $50k would be more popular.

MTH Right. You--not AEV or Jeep--are the "manufacturer."

The J8 has supposedly been available for some time now, and it's always been offered with either a Hemi or the diesel engine. I have yet to actually hear that anyone has gotten one though.

At $50k+ when it's all said and done, they aren't exactly bargains either.

Anybody actually ever seen or heard of a real one in civilian hands?

I saw a tip at "Jeeps Offroad" forum, pointing to article at JPfreek, which quoted Mark Allen: "The J8 MILSPEC offered through American Expedition Vehicles is a direct result of being driven by the enthusiast. This program is a very non-traditional approach, but was necessary to allow quick access to the U.S consumer of what many consider the ultimate Jeep." The rest was down to Bing/Google.

So, for those who want a jeep with diesel, here it is, apparently available now:
American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) - The AEV J8 MILSPEC, the toughest jeep available to civilians ever

This is a cunning way to bypass anti-diesel regulations.
