Vin, thanks! Looking from his plates he is in Ishikawa Japan. Unfortunately, that is on the north west side, I am in Yokohama just south of Tokyo. Too big a distance for wheeling together. He does have one BAD LOOKING JEEP!

Yes, the rear tag mount is in a very bad spot. I fixed it by relocating it to the original U.S. spec position. I know in some countries the tag location is regulated as you say "visible from both sides". Maybe you can use this:
Rock Hard 4x4 Parts License Plate Relocation Bracket with ORO PlateLITE
Cutting that mud flap off the back is very easy to do. I relocated the number plate to the U.S. location and removed the mud scoop :eek2: on the rear bumper.
Because the Japanese number plate is slightly larger than the U.S. plate the holes did not line up :thinking: so I had to fabricate a mount point for the factory plate mount.

Omar Brannstrom Hi from Sweden

I have noticed that the "export" wrangler models have one of the worst departure and approach angles compared to the other 4x4 vehicles.

I really wish that we got the US bumpers here in Sweden, much better and better angles.

I think the law in Europe is that You can to se the registration plate from both left and right side, the US version can not be seen from the right side because it is hidden on the left side and the tire is in the way.

Maybe one could cut off the tag and put the registristration plate on the spare wheel intead.

The front bumper is closed so there are no gape so no stones can hit people on the export bumper, the US bumper is open and stones can fly away???

tiger3 OK, so I got it all done.... It took 6 hours. I took my time of course so I did not screw anything up. All around looks like I got 1.5" lift from this. I had a full tank of gas too. The fenders were all about 3' (36 inches) from the floor. I got these off e-bay for $200 and $65 shipping! Springs now 18/59. So now for the pictures....

Most fenders went from 36 inches to 37+ inches. The right side of the jeep was lower due to gas tank of course. The steering wheel did not change from what I can tell. Driving is fine, but I will get a wheel alignment next week to make sure. It was pulling to the left anyway when letting go of the steering. Ride is now firm and the squat and yaw I had accelerating and braking is reduced to a great degree. So far I like it. I got my JKS Quick discos installed, but I was beat after that so I did not take pics, will get some later.

Sorry, for so many pics and their quality is not what I would like to have had.

SeaComms Make sure you loosen all control arm and track bar bolts before dropping the springs out. Once the new ones are in, bounce it up and down a few times then tighten them all back up to spec. This way the bushes are not twisted up.

As for wheel alignment, no, lifting the JK does not effect anything but the caster angle, and this is not adjustable. It will alter the steering wheel centre position, but that's a simple matter of turning the adjuster on the drag link.

the Kolector If the roads there are anything like they are here, it definately wouldnt hurt to at least have it checked. I dont know if it is a must just by swapping the components, but I probably would go ahead and have it checked anyhow. Just to be safe and just by .02

tiger3 Update: I finally received my 4dr Rubicon Shocks and Springs. Shipped to me from US. I will be putting them on tomorrow. I plan to take lots of measurements and pics of course. I will be swapping from 14/56 springs to 18/59 on my 2dr. Shocks will also be changed. I am also installing my JKS Quicker Disconnects at the same time.

Question: Will I need a wheel alignment after changing out these springs and shocks?? I know I will have to straighten the steering wheel a bit. Thanks!

It depends on what your current coils are.

Also, there's another level up from those coils, FYI.

If you've got weak stock coils in a 2 door jeep and swap them with the stiffest coils, you could get almost a 2" boost. If you've already got pretty stiff coils, you'll get little to no benefit. That's particularly true if you have a 4 door, which tends to have stiffer coils already and in any event is several hundred pounds heavier.

tiger3 Rics1997, thanks that sounds like good sound advice and Daggo66's tread was very informative as well. I got to go back to reread it... I did not think to just swap springs and shocks. It is always good to get a second opinion especially from the pros!

I checked my springs and here is what I have:

Front ***6314AC (5212) Rear ***4256AA (6800)


Correct me if I am wrong, but I would still need to replace shocks with more travel. Any recommendations? Thanks!

rics1997 There is another possible option that will completely be legal. More then likely (you will have to check to make sure) your 2 door sport has weak stock springs. I had 14/55 on mine. By going to what many call rubicon springs (not really their name), you could get as much as 2" and since they are stock springs just stiffer their should be no way anyone could say a word about them.

Check you coil spring number and post it and we can come close to telling how much lift you will get out of it. The lift comes from the fact the coils won't compress like the common weak springs on JK sport models. To find out what ones you have, look under your jeep and a tag should be on the springs. The last two number (the last two digits are letters, ignore) are your spring stiffness.

Front should be 12-19 and rear 53-60 with the lowest being weak and the highest being stiff.

When I did mine I got 1.5" lift but had a very heavy bumper installed too. I went from 14/55 to 19/60

I also did a Teraflex 1" coil spacer up front to take out rake.


Here is a detailed thread on it and the stock number from Mopar.com. Dealer can get using this part numbers too but usually more expensive then directly from Mopar

Thanks! I really like how it turned out, couldn't be better. But as for the spacers, they stick out about an inch past the fender flares...And if a cop pull you me or anyone over because the tires stick 1" past the fenders...he is a total dick I could understand like 3-6" but 1"...really? But here in the US they aren't really strickt about that. And you wouldn't need to remove them every time, they are legal, dont void any warranty and are safe. There is nothing wrong with them at all.

tiger3 Clutch127, yep I saw your post and you lift turned out great! I like the way your jeep sits, very nice. So how far out from the fender do your tires protrude? I see they may stick out a bit with your back spacers. That is one of my biggest concerns. I think that if I had to have back spacers I would be changing my tires or equipment each time inspection comes around. One of my buddies was pulled over because his tires stuck out too much. This is my DD as well. Thanks!

Clutch127 Read this thread. It is my review and write up on my TeraFlex 2.5" lift I just installed on wednesday. It rides great and the 9550 series shocks are very nice!

I have read the many threads here and there is so much information/options for what I want to do my head is hurting….
I am needing to lift mine because I have the export model and my rear bumper has the tag mounted below the bumper. What were they thinking with this design!? The departure angle sucks! I already tried to take the rear tag off on the first day out on beginner level trails. (only had it 3 days in this video)

I have some restrictions with what I can legally do here in Japan since I am registering it on the Navy base. For example, the tires must be covered and not extend past the fenders. You can replace springs and shocks, but there is a height limit from stock that you can go. I am still looking up the actual limit and will ask the base shop that does the inspections next week. I had a 1994 Suzuki Jimny that I had aftermarket shackles on the leaf springs with larger tires. I had to change to smaller tires and put the stock shackles back on every 2 years to pass inspection and then put it all back on to lift the Jimny back to normal. This was a PITA…

Since I am able to change springs and shocks and stay legal (within limits).
With the 2.5" TF kit they recommend wheel spacers to run 35's. I do not plan to replace tires any time soon and will run stock wheels for a while as well. I may change to 33's later but will stay with stock rims. I just do not want to replace the fenders to cover the tires yet. I think the spacers will cause the tires to extend past the fender well.

Teraflex 2.5 lift kit w/shocks or w/o (how are the TF VSS 9550 shock absorbers??)
Old Man Emu 2" lift kit (I dislike the yellow shocks)

Other ways to possibly go:
Old Man Emu 2" springs
Mopar 2" lift kit

Also considering these:
Bilstein 5100 shocks (for use w/ 2-3.5" lift) Any one running these?

I already ordered the U.S tag mount bracket to locate the rear tag to the normal U.S location and will cut that mud scoop off the back bumper once it arrives. I am looking for advice or recommendations regarding lift kits. Thanks in advance!
